Business. At a meowing of the cor
porators of tho Albany Canal and Manu
facturing Company, at their office, on
Monday night, it was ordered that a sur
yey be immediately made of a route or
line for the proposed canal, by a compe
tent person, commencing at a point below
Lebanon. It is believed by many that
there is fall enough, and that the water
can be taken out of. the Santiam at a
point a considerable distance below Xjcb
anon, at much less labor and cost, than
at any point above that village. If,
upon the proper survey, this should
prove to be the case, it will save a con
siderable, amount of blasting through
the solid rock, lessen the length of the
canal two or three miles, and of course
lessen the cost of bringing the water to
this city several thousand dollars. "We
believe it it the intention of the corpo
rators to get a full and complete
survey of the route winch the canal will
follow in coming to this city, and ascer
tain, as near as may be, the entire cost
of the work, before opening stock books
It is a work of vast importance to the
future of Albany, and we hope that all
will take that interest in it which its
merits demand.
Letter From: Monroe-.
J. M. Curley. Everybody knows
Cnrley.v He was an excellent " drawist,
his only fault being that he " drew" too
much, of the liquid in his." Since his
removal to Salem he has " indulged"
; very freely in fact has been drunk for
j more than a month past. A petition,
signed by a large number of the residents
I of ' Salem, presented to the Recorder of
that city, stating the above facts, has
caused him. to issue a proclamation for
bidding any one to sell, give, or in any
manner furnish said Curley with wine,
spirituous or malt liquors. In the lan
guage of the proclamation, Curley is de
clared " a common drunkard."
Monroe, Ogn., Jan. 17th, 1870.
Ed.. Register : This town will be
remembered by many of your readers as
a very unpromising little village, situated
on the Long Tom, about ten miles from
its mouth. The Monroe Mills, a Post
Office, one or two stores, a blacksmith
shop and half a dozen residences, had
long been the only indications of a town.
Now there are a dozen business houses in
town, including the various shops, all of
which appear to be doing well.
Having no means of transportation ex
cept by wagon, the merchants could not
compete successfully with their rivals in
Corvallis and Harrisburg, and through
these channels most of the trade has
flown to supply the thickly settled coun
try lying in this vicinity. About a year
ago the Long Tom Steamboat Company
was organized, for the purpose of putting
a line of boats on this river and the Wil
lamette. They purchased the steamer
Ann, last season, and brought her suc
cessfully to this place. She comes now
whenever there is a load for her. Yes
terday she carried away 1,200 sacks of
flour and a quantity of domestic produce.
About a week ago she brought up one
hundred bushels of wheat and five tons
of merchandise, and carried away seven
tons of ilour, nine of bacon, and one of
domestic produce. She is a small boat,
but when she appeared in front of the
city for the first time, the owner of the
Monroe Mills, who is an Englishman, de
clared that the LongTom contained water
enough to float the Great Heastern !
Several new buildings wero erected
here last summer, of which the school
house is one of the most conspicuous. It
is 22x38, and is very well finished, and
thoroughly furnished. The school is very
well supported.
The Masonic and Good Templar Orders
are each in a flourishing condition. They
have a new lodge room, over the new
store opposite Kiter's Saloon.

the franking privilege, was on exhibi-

Wood. Parties owing us, who wish
to pay in wood, are requested to bring it
right along. Five or ten cords wouldn't
be amiss, just now.

New Brooms. Mr. W. D. Uelding
has got everything in order and has com
menced the manufacture of brooms. He
had the kindness to present us with one
of the first made, and we say without
hesitation that it is superior in make and
finish to any broom ever brought to this
market that we have any knowledge of.
It is the intention of Mr. Belding to
make as good a broom and sell it as low
as a similar article of foreign manufac
ture. Huxrak tor the. broom manufac
tory. New Goods. Our friend Titus, at
the New jewelry store on first street, has
received a new stock of goods scarf
pins, rings, leather goods, etc., etc. Mr.
T, exhibited to us a beautiful gold ring
manufactured by him for a tasty young
gentleman of this city, that was pretty
enough for anybody. Drop in and take
a look at his new stock.
Don't Like It. If there is anything
in this world that will make an editor
" hot," it is to find his " brain work,"
that has cost him much labor, copied
into an exchange and the credit given to
another, or tho wrong name given.
Through an oversight in proof-reading
we gave credit to articles, taken from the
Jacksonville Sentinel, to the Journal,
when there is uo such paper as the
Journal published in Jacksonville. Our
brother of the Sentinel don't like it, and
we don't blame him. We therefore ex
cept, as gracefully as may be, his apology,
and it he has said anything he's sorry
for, we're glad of it.
Sewixa Machines. Messrs. Blain & Young
are averts for the sale of Sewixo Machines, and
all the fixtures necessary thereto. This enables
those who wish to purchase any of the first-class
machines to get what they order at the lowest
cash price, and if anything should be lacking, or
should get out of repair, these gentlemen will
take pleasure in furnishing the missing article, or
put the machine in running order, without extra
cost quite an advantage, as those who have pur
chased machines at a distance, have learned by
sad experience. No household is complete with
out one of these labor-savers, and if you want to
be sure of getting what you order, at the lowest
price, and have it delivered to you in complete
running order, call at Blain and Young's and
leave your order. Nuff ced.
Markets. We have no late report
of the San Francisco markets, but it is
generally believed that wheat has ad
vanced the prevailing drouth being the
cause. Wheat in New York has fallen
in price, and Liverpool quotations are
given at 9s Id a slight decline. The
prospective short crop in California has
advanced the price of wheat in this city
to 52 for Sonora, and 57 for white.
Should the dry weather continue in Cali
fornia, wheat will still further appre
ciate. Even this slight advance will be
good news to those of our farmers who
have refused to sell at 4550 cents.
Chinese laborers having built the
Pacific Railroad, when no others could
be found to perform the labor, Califor-
mans now propose to prohibit them trom
working on the Oregon and California
road, although that is our only chance
for a road. They are at work in their
Legislature on a bill which is to tax the
Company ten dollars per quarter for
every Chinese laborer employed on the
road, which amounts to a virtual prohib
ition. Statesman.
