LOCAL AFFAIRS
SAstiam Canal. Sincatho question
of bringing the Oregon Central Railroad
(East Side) through Albany has been
settled in the affirmative, other interests
that affect the future prosperity and
growth, of oar city to at least as great an
extent as the securing of the railroad, are
being canvassed by our citizens. The
first in importance that now presents its
' claims to the attention of our business
men, is the proposition to bring the wa
ters of the South Fork of the Santiam,
by means of a navigable canal, to this
city. Un last Monday night a lar
number of our citizens assembled at the
office of Messrs. Beach & Monteith, to
thoroughly canvass the . subject ascer
tain the length, probable cost, and the
advantages to accrue to those investing
their money in the construction of a
navigable canal. As this matter of dig
ging a canal has been broached before,
there were several persons at the meeting
who had been over the whole ground,
and were well acquainted with the "lay
ol the country." Messrs. Backensto,
Warner, Powell, and others, addressed
the meeting, stating the practicability,
length, fall, benefits, etc., of the canal.
The general conclusion seemed to be that
the length of the canal would be about
nineteen miles ; that as there were no
natural obstructions it could be fin
ished in one season, provided it was
pushed; that it would be a paying in
vestment to stockholders from the first,
and that the , benefits to accrue to this
city from its completion, could hardly be
estimated. Mr. Hart, contractor on the
Yamhill ditch, stated that he had figured
on eighteen miles of canal, without locks, j
and his contract price would be 27,000.
He thought that it would be necessary to
construct from four to six locks, said
locks costing 1,000 each. Mr. Hart's
estimates were made on a canal similar

Mr. Tweedale succeeded in collecting
quite an amount of money on Thursday,
to aid a widow, with two children, in in
digent circumstances, to reach her home
in California. .
The new Marshal has been making it
lively for the boys since he went into
office. Says he's got to play " even " on
those fines.
The steamer Success stuck on a bar a
couple of miles above this city on Tues
day, where she lay about twelve hours.

An artitle entitled " Ortgon" on our
fourth page, -would pay to cut out and
send to friends in the East.
Millinery. Mrs. Duniway has a new
card in this issue, calling attention to her
millinery establishment. She has an
elegant stock of goods, and is prepared
to cut and make dresses, etc., etc., in the
latest and most tasty styles. Our lady

Meeting Looking to the Organization; of 1
a Canal Company. ,
Albany, Jan.. 10th, 1870.
By request, quite a large number of
the citizens of Albany met at the office
of Messrs. Beach and Monteith, on
Monday evening, to consult and take
steps for the purpose of organizing an
incorporated company, to bring the wa
ter of the Santiam into Albany.
Dr. W. P. Alexander was called to the
Chair, and Jno. Conner chosen Secretary.
The President called upon Judge
Powell to state the object of the meet
ing. After remarks from several gen
tlemen present, as to the importance,
route, feasibility, &c, the following res
olution was unanimously adopted :
Rt solved, That it is expedient, and the
demands call for the bringing in of said
water. : ; -
Articles of incorporation iwere then
offered by Judge Powell, which were
read and left with the Secretary.
On motion, a committee of six, viz :
Messrs. Powell, Beach, Elkins, Hannon,
Cranor and Conner, were chosen to finish
Articles of Incorporation, and take such
other necessary steps as may be deemed
advisable, and to report to the next meet
ing. '
The vote of the meeting was then
taken, which resulted as follows : That
the subscription stock be fixed at 40,
000. and the shares at 100 each.
On motion, adjourned to meet Thurs
day evening, the 13 th inst., at the same

The following resolutions were adopted
by Covenant Lodge No. 12, I. O. O. F.,
at Ilarrisburg, Ogn., Jan. 1st, 1870.
Whereas, It has pleased the Supreme
Ruler to remove from earth our late
brother. Past Grand F. M. Koontz,
therefore, be it
Resolved, That while we bow in hum
ble submission to the iusciutable decree
of Divine Providence, we are again re
minded that ilin the midst of life we are
in death ;" that those who now condole
with the relatives and friends of our late
Brother, will, in turn, be stilled in the
cold and cheerless home of the dead.
Resolved, That in the death of our
late Brother, the fraternity has lost a
worthy, zealous member, the community
an estimable citizen, and his wife a de
voted husband.
Resolved, That we will ever cherish
the memory of our deceased Brother
with feelings of the highest respect and
esteem, and sincerely mingle our heart
felt sympathies with the bereaved wife,
relatives and friends, in this their hour
of sorrow, and we recommend his wife
to the watch-care of the Odd Fellows
everywhere.
Resolved, That these Resolutions be
spread upon the minutes, a copy be fur
nished each of the county papers for
publication, and also a copy be furnished
the wife of our deceased Urotner, and

, Money Matters. Our merchants
and others say that money is scarcer just
now than for a long time previous, yet
we have seen quite a number of twenty
dollar pieces in the last two weeks.

lished at Portland, by Messrs. Morrison
& Miller, is a new candidate in the
newspaper line. , It presents a neat ap
pearance; and if properly' conducted will
prove a success, we hope.
Rain. The nice cooling rains that
set in on Monday have kept "set in"
pretty well through the week. The
roads are better now than they were dur
ing the cold snap.
