A watch night meeting was held here ;
also, one at Wesley Chapel, four miles
west from here.
A protracted meeting is now in pro

interest. It is conducted by the Meth

Something new has appeared on the
streets, in the shape of a son of the Em

whose voice can be heard crying on the
corners of the streets, saying that his
productions can't be beat save with a
stick.
A young man teaching school a few
miles west of here, was dragged to a pond
by his pupils and took an involuntary
bath in the cool waters and limpid mud
of said pond, thereby spoiling his watch
and endangering his life, at this inclement
season of the year all because he re
fused to " treat." A wholesome appli
cation of the civil law would be a good
lesson for such pupils to study for a while
to come. The lesson also would be of
vast importance to the parents who
board such ruffians.

Fraxcis M. KoojtTZ, aged 29 years.
. Koontz arrived in this city by boat on
W ednesday. : The corpse was accompa

Riley Koontz, father of deceased. Mr.
F. M- Koontz was formerly engaged in
the furniture business in Ilarrisburg,
but had left for California io the hopes
of benefitting his health. He was
afflicted with that fell disease, consump
tion, to which he succumbed, in the
prime of manhood, shortly after his ar
rival in California. He was a prominent
member of both the Odd Fellows and
Masonic orders, and in life was a true
man. His father and mother, being in
formed that all hope of life with him
was ended, hastened to his bedside, but
arrived two days after his death. May
the blessings of the Father of the be
reaved ones be with them io this hour of
their affliction.

Holladay's LocoMOTiVE. "Dallas"
tells the following on a resident of Cana
da : Said resident was down on a visit,
and had been looking at the sights
" round town." Upon returning to his
"stopping place," he remarked, among
other things, that he had seen that loco
motive sent here by Ben. Ilolladay. As
this was news to his listeners, they in
quired as to its whereabouts. He said it
was beyant Wood's blacksmith shop; and
in reply to other inquiries, said it was a
long narrow thing, and from the looks of
the tires, he should judgeit bad crossed
the plains. Further inquiry proved that he
had got sight of Albany Fire Company's
hand engine, and as it was the first he
ever cast his eyes on, he at once took it
for a veritable locomotive which Ben.
Ilolladay had sent to this city to create a
railroad excitement.

Correspondence.
The subjoined correspondence sufficiently ex
plains itself :
Portland, Oregon, Nov. 15, 1869.
Mkssrs. Eversos t Haines, General Agents
New England Mutual Life Insurance Compa
ny, Boston :
Gentlemen On my own behalf and in the name
of my orphan children, I beg to thank you, and
through you the New England Mutual Life In
surance Company of Boston, for its munificence
in paying me my terminated policy on the life of
my hesband. On tbe Zixt ot January, ISo'J,
misfortune compelled me to forego the payment
of the last pr:inium which non-payment in any
other company would have lost me my policy
but I am now overjoyed with the receipt of the
amount of the policy (less the amount of the un
paid premium only), thanks to the equity of the
Massachusetts Lapse Laws, that must bless many
widows and their children. I recommend tbe
New England Mutual to all who would provide
against possible misfortune. I sincerely thank
yon again, gentlemen, for the payment, and also
for your generous and gentlemanly assistance in
the matter. 1 Respectfully,
BETSEY MILLER.
Portland, Oregon, Nov. 15, 1859.
Mkssrs. Everson A IIaines, General Agents of
the New England Mutual Life Insurance Com
pany, of Boston :
Gentlemen Having taken a lively interest in
the affairs of a large and destitnte family, left
by an old resident of this city, who died Aug. 2,
1869, and who was insured in the New England
Mutual Life Insurance Company, we take pleas
ure in making the following statement for the in
formation of the public :
A. E. C. Miller wss insured by ordinary Life
Policy No. 13,054, bearing date January 21,1863.
He paid annual payments to January 21, 1868,
inclusive. Sinee then nothing has been paid.
He died August 2, 1869, over eighteen months
after the last payment of premium, yet your
company working under the Equitable Lapse
Laws of Massachusetts, pays tbe widow and
orphans the whole policy, deducting only the pre
mium due ; while in all other companies doing
business here, about which we know anything, the
policy would long since have been forfeited,
- By tbe New England Mutual, the widow has
been paid f4 650 50. Ihis we consider munifi
cent, more especially when we take iuto consid
eration that the family would not have received a
cent from any other company doing business on
this coast. - This, in oar estimation, is enough to
recommend this company above all others, This
is Equity, this is Mutuality. We, therefore, rec
ommend this company to the public, aa the only
company that has no forfeitures.
We herewith inclose you the acknowledgments
of the widow. Respectfully, et,,
