A Bear Story. We remember a
very comical bear that belonged to Mr.
Hammond, and amused with his tricks
the mirth-loving people of Paris, in Ox
ford county, many years ago. lie was
captured when a little cub, and was
brought up by hand as one of the family.
He claimed the warmest place on the
hearth-stone, and nestled in cold weather
with the dogs before the fire. None of
the pet animals about the farm were
tamer than he ; and none loved better to
climb u into his masters's lap and re
trieve hisc&res, or understood the whims
of his mistress when benng for a choice
morsel. . His serious countenance always
gave great "effect to his antics ; and he
secmedpjunderstand when he caused a
laugh among the household. As he was
of t pry jpg' disposition, and forever peep
ing'into every hole, the family were
obHgedjto-lock up every thing, even the
closets where they kept their clothing.
"When hejtook it into his head to make
up a ne?t, it was all the same to him
whether the articles he heaped together
were wogKn or fur, cottou or silk. If a
hen cackled when ihe egg was laid, Mr.
Dear understood it as well as any of the
family orjfche feathered tribe; and if he
wis" not prevented ie would find it and
suek it before the cackling foul had ceased-her
solig. ' ;:
:One Saday.thiAmiIy went to church,
and left the bear alone -at home. Bruin
inrproveoT-the opportunity, andLrummaged
aU over the house: in search of fun or
something to eat' Unfortunately, the
gubd house-wife' had left the cellar door
unroekei and ajar . and it was not long
before thbearydiacorered it. and crept
ddwn thotairsi'-?;.Oncedown in the cel
lar, he espied the molasses barrel ; and if
thfcte was anything in the house he was
excessively fond of,- it -was molasses or
honey. Bruin pawed over the barrel,
licked the, tightly-driven bung, and was
about abandoning it in despair, when he
espied the spile.:. Grasping it with his
strong teeth, he easily withdrew it, and
out;cameJhe thick, molasses in a steady
stream, to the groat delight of the bear,
who clapped his mouth to the hole ,and
sucked away with grunts of self satisfac
tion. -
iXhe molasses still flowed tind still the
boar keptjiis mouth to the orifice, pausing
naw ant) then to take a long breath. At
length he was full ; his stomach could
hold no more ; yet his appetite was not
satisfied.- He squatted on his haunches
and viewed the slill running stream with
disgust, tto think that the supply was so
abUndantJ'and that, alas ! he could hold
no, niorer The molasses had now run out
in 'a largT quantity, and had formed a
great pot)l"ou the floor ; but Bruin dove
iiito it, and rolled himself a thousand
times in "the thick fluid, until his shaggy
coat was. covered from his nose to his
tail, with molasses, dirt, and gravel
stones ! w
There' he lay in the sweet pool, the
picture of self-satisfaction, as cats roll
and tumble in a field of the catnip herb.
All at once Mr. Bear became sick at the
stomach ! and it was a new sensa
tion to him something he had
never felt before. As he grew worse, he
thought of his master and mistress, and
so crept up stairs to ask for their conso
lation ; but they had not returned from
church. Then he crawled up another
story, and got into the girls' bed drawing
the snowy white sheets over his besmear
ed form. There he lay groaning and
grunting the sickest . bear : ever seen in
that part of the country.
W be a. the girls arrived they were hor
rified at tha scene, and were going to lay
the jbrooaastick over Bruin, when he
started on the run for the haymow with
thfr?TKSets sticking to his back ! r It was
sometime- before the bear got well, and
still longer before his mistress forgave
him. ,

Portland, May 21, 1869.
I have tried Dr. ' J. W. Murray's Lung and
Liver Balsam. I used it in my family with the
best of success. I was sick for some months and
used erery remedy. 1 ealle4 in several physi-r
cians, but they did me no good. I exhausted
every remedy known to the medical profession,
and received no benefit. This Lung and Liver
Balsam cured me, and I do not hesitate to recom

"GAY" PLOWS,

THE simplicity and practicability of this new
Plow commends it favorably to the special
notice of every farmer. It possesses a decided
superiority over all other plows now in use. The
wheels are four feet in diameter, and run on tbe
nnplowed land. Its entire construction is in no
way complicated. The plow is managed in every
manner with ease, and requires only two levers
to be nsed in making any alteration. The supe
riority of the "Gay" Plow Will be clearly shown
by the following certificate :
We, the undersigned, citizens of Linn county,
Oregon, having purchased and nsed upon our
farms the "Gay" Plow, hereby certify that the
same has given us entire satisfaction. Its facility
for adjusting to suit tbe depth of furrow without
moving from the scat, is simple and easy. We
like the plow for its draught, because tbe same is
brought to bear directly npon the plow-beam in
stead of the carriage ; also, because it is strong
and durable, all except the wood-work being con
structed of wrought iron no castings are nsed.
The wheels running npon the solid land is an ad
vantage over other gang-plows, in striking off
land and in plowing, not having to make the nec
essary changes in the machinery, and the seat is
always level, not throwing the driver forward or
sideways as in other plows. Better work and
more of it ean be accomplished by the use of this
Plow than by hand.
We take pleasure in reeommending the "Gat"
Plow to our brother farmers, as one having no
