Pork. From the best information we
can gather, more hogs are being slaugh
tered in this county this Winter than
usual. Also, most every farmer is kill
ing from half a dozen to hall a hundred.
The Price Paid. Messrs. Irvine &
Co., meat packers at Scio, are paying six
cents per pound for pork hogs that weigh
less than 200 pounds, and seven cents
for those that weigh 200 pounds and
upwards.
Bad Hoads. Those who have trav
eled about in the winter for several years
back say that the roads are as bad now as
they ever saw them. They trust that
the " going " will not get much worse
this winter.
- Prtm Brownsville.' .-
Editor Register -As there are &
great many of the readers of the Regis
ter who have not the opportunity to
visit this place, and still might desire to
knew something of its dimensions and
business, we propose to write of it, in
brief, in this coiumunicatfcn.
The town is divided by the Calapooia
river into two parts, known as North and
South Brownsville. The connection be- j
tween the two towns is made by a sub
stantial wooden bridge, covered and en
closed for a span of 100 feet. In this
communication we will speak of both as
Brownsville proper, as it is generally
known. Our statements, although hastily
penned, we think will conform to the
facts in the main.
We have two hotels, two livery stables,
five dry goods, grocery and general vari
ety stores, five blacksmith shops, one
tailor shop, one butcher shop, one-furni-
ture shop, one cooper shop, one paint
shop, one drug, book and variety store,
one barber shop, one saddle and harness
shop, one saddle tree shop, one woolen
mill, one grist mill, one tan yard, one ex
tensive shop for preparing house finish
ing material, turning round work and by
pattern, such as wagon spokes, ax hand
les, etc. There are two district schools,
two Sabbath schools, two literary socie
ties, four organized congregations, to wit:
Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and
Christian or Campbellites ; . the latter
worship in W. L. Smith's hall, and have
for their pastor Rev. John Harris. The
Baptists worship in W. II. Kirk's hall,
and have for their pistor Rev. Champion I
Richardson. The Presbyterians have a
church of their own, and have Rev. Mr.
Robe as their pastor. The Methodist
church is out of repair, and hence they
New Saw Mill. Mr. II. B. Polly is
building a new saw-mill on the south fork
of the Santiam river, about twelve miles
above Lebanon. He is putting up a sub
stanial frame 24x60 feet in size. The
motive power will be water, obtained from
the river, and brought on the wheel
through a race. , The mill is situated in
a grove of excellent fir timber, and the
lumber manufactured will bo of good
quality.
Romantic. A few mornings since a
romantic couple of the mature age of
thirty, or thereabouts, called upon a
Justice of the Peace in a neighboring
village, at the early hour of 1 a. m., and
desired him to tie the nuptial knot.
This he did with as good grace as possi
ble, and sent the happy pair on their
way.
That Ghost Was out in full feather
the other night. This time the ghost
was gotten up in awful style, with the
aid of a pumpkin, into which holes for
eyes, nose and mouth, were cut, a lighted
candle inserted, the whole covered with
a blanket. It was indeed a fearful appa
rition, probably giving Mart. Brown the
nisrhtmare for a month.

The old ladies in Oregon would always bring their

night watchman, arrested Bob Hadley
for drunkenness. Since that time Bob
has used all sorts of vile and insulting
epithets toward Felch, and has let no
opportunity of personally abusing him
pass. On the night before the shooting,
Hadley declared to many that he intend
ed to kill Felch before morning. The
watchman in his beat passed Hadley sev
eral times during the night in question,
and finally he met and passed him near
Renfrew's hotel. He soon turned the j
corner, and had got a few steps when he
saw Hadley following him, and making
motions as though he was going to draw
his pistol. At this the watchman com-,
mahded Hadley to stop, informing him
that he was his prisoner. Hadley re
plied by saying, " d n you and
your prisoner," at the same time
working at his revolver and advancing.
At this Jreicu bred. His shot was in
stantly returned by Hadley, who emptied
two chambers of his pistol at the mar
shal, but without effect. The ball
from the marshal's pistol took effect as
above stated. In the- melee Hadley also
had the middle finger of his left hand
shot off. The surgeon probed the wound
to a depth of five inches, and had not
found the ball when Mr. Humphrey left.
The wound is a severe one, and may
prove fatal. Hadley is well known all
over the Stte and in Idaho, and was
considered a desperado.
Debating Clubs.- Almost every
precinct in this county has organized de
batipg clubs which will be kept up dur
ing the long evenings of Winter. These
clubs are attended by the ladies as well
as the men. We have always regarded
these debating societies as - being second
in importance to the common school. In
the club room Young America takes his
first lessons in self-government and par
liamentary laws, and from there he goes
out prepared to give expression to his
vicw3 on any subject agitating the pub
lie. These country disputations make
him a better citizen, for he is taught to
treat his opponent with respect, and the
desire to remove the obstructions to his
will by physical force is subdued. By
all means let the American system of de
bating clubs be cherished, and establish
ed in every community.
Sidewalk. The City Council has
ordered a sidewalk to be built on the cast
side of the district school property. As
sidewalks are built at the expense of the
property-holders, the directors will very
probably call on property-holders in the
district to foot the bill-
especially adapted to this occasion. If
you want to visit a wilderness of beauty
go to McCormiek's.

The Time to Purchase Real
estate is when it is low, witb a big pros
pect for an early advance. The place to
buy real estate is in the county or city
which offers the three-fold inducement of
health, wealth and ' happiness. Linn
county presents .greater inducements to
persons of limitedumeans who wish to
invest in realty, than any other county in
Oregon. She has within her borders a
greater body of rich agricultural lands of
the most productive character, . than any
other county ; is situated in the center of
the richest and most extensive valley on
the Pacific coast; her citizens are indus
trious, energetic and thriving ; she has
the Willamette river at her door upon
which to ship her produce now, and will
soon have added to her freighting facili
ties the Oregon Central Railroad. Im
mense bodies of land, capable of the
highest cultivation, now lie undeveloped,
and only need the hand of industry 'to
be made to blossom as the rose. Real
estate is now lower than it has been for
years past. Houses and lots can be
bought at . fair figures now in this city
at prjees which, twelve months hence,
will seem fabulously low. Now is the
time to buy realty, and the place to buy,
where money invested will double itself
in short order, is in the city of Albany.
