The boat caught fire about half-past
six o'clock on Wednesday evening, about
45 miles above Cairo, in the Mississippi

cards. The steamer was run aground on
a bar, the pilot -supposing the passengers
could wade ashore. Unfortunately, at i

Farmers Can Ride and Plow,
BY SECCRIXG ONE OF THE
"GAY" PLOWS,
Manufactured and sold for the very low price of
$65 and ITS.
TnE simplicity and practicability of this pew
Plow eommends it favorably to the special
notice of every farmer. It possesses a ueciaea.
superiority over all other plows now in use. xae
wheels are four feet in diameter, and run on the
unplowcd land. Its entire construction is in no
way complicated. The plow is managed in every
manner with ease, and requires only two levers
to be used in making any alteration. The supe
riority of the "Gay" Plow will be clearly shown
by the following certificate s
We, the undersigned, citizens of Linn county,
Oregon, having purchased and used upon our
farms the "Gay" Plow, hereby certify that the
same has given us entiresatisfaction. Its facility
fur adjusting to suit the depth of furrow without
nioving from the seat, is simple and easy. We
like the plow for its draught, because the same is
brought to bear directly upon the .plow-beam in
stead of the carriage ; also, because it is strong
and durable, all except the wood-work being con
structed of wrousht iron no castings are used.
The wheels running upon the solid land is an ad
vantage over other gang-plows, in strikine off
land and in plowing, not having to make the nec
essary changes in the machinery, and the seat is
always level, not throwing the driver forward or
sideways as in other plows. Better work and
more of it can be accomplished by the use of this
Plow than by hand.
We take pleasure in recommending the "Gay"
Plow to our brother farmers, as one having no
superior in Oregon.

The only officers of the boat known to be
s saved are George Fulton, chief engineer; j
; Edward Fau,lkerson, pilot, and E. P.
Watson, carpenter. Captain Scott was !
last seen floating On a spar. Men on j
shore rode down the stream in hopes of
finding him, bnt he was not to be found, j
The scene aboard was heartrending in j
the extreme. The flames spread with ';
wonderful rapidity under the action of a j
strong wind. Passengers in wild terror I
crowded on the forecastle until they i
were forced overboard en , masse and j
drowned each other in desperate strug- j
gles to free themselves. Others would j
jump into tne water, whirl around in a
strong current for a moment and then
disappear. Mr. Fulton jumped over
board and attempted to swim ashore, but
coming in contact with a number of
mules, swam to and climbed on the wheel
of the boat. While there the steam pipe
burst and the wheel revolved three times,
but he clung to it and was finally taken
ashore in a skiff. Charles Williams, a
deck hand, says he tried to smother the
fira when he first discovered it with
blankets, but the wind blowcd so hard
that he failed in bis efforts. Hose was
also brought to. play on the fire, but
the crowd of frenzied passengers rushed
with such irresistible force on the men
having it in charge that they were obliged
to give it tip. Williams then threw
overboard all of the hay and getting npon
it drifted to the stem of the boat, where
he encountered the boat's yawl contain
six men and a woman. lie was taken
in, "but having no oars could not stem the
current. . 'Williams and the woman were
put ashore, and the remaining men made
another attempt to reach the steamer by
using the seats of the yawl for paddles,
bat the current was so strong that they
were carried down stream and seen no
more. Williams thinks not more than
thirty persons were saved, but it is hoped
that more of them reached the shore.

following under date of Chicago, No
vember 1st :
A Tribune's Si evr York special says
the heavy break down in gold is now
known to be caused by the general be
lief that Secretary Boutwell will in a
very few weeks make a grand coup and
at once return to specie- payments, thus
forestalling the decisions of the Supreme
Court, which will undoubtedly be that
the legal tender act is unconstitutional.
The deeision is expected about the end of
the- year. This action of the Secretary
will undoubtedly cause temporary dis
tress through the country and create a
panic in the produce and general merch
andise markets, but as this step has to be
taken some time, the present is consid
ered the most convenient politically,
better, indeed, than any other period not
so remote from the Presidential election.
Among the numerous 'financial matters
in contemplation by Mr. Boutwell is one
to replace the five twenty bonds about
due,, by a large foreign loan. This has
often been contradicted, but nevertheless,
i$ now about agreed upon with the agents
of foreign- bankers now in this country.

Balsam for the Liver and Blood, Nature's own
remedy. One of the celebrated physicians of
Portland says he is cured of the Lung and Liver
complaint, and says he owes his life to
Dr. Murray's Lung and. Liver Balsam.
Read what he says : '
Portland, May 21 , 1869.
I haw tried Dr. J. W. Murray's Lung and
Liver Balsam. I used it in my family with the
best of success. I was sick for some months and
used every remedy. I called in several physi
cians, but they did me no good. . I exhausted
every remedy known to the medical profession,
and received no benefit. This Long and Liver
Balsam cured me, and I do not hesitate to recom
mend it to the public as a good and safe remedy
to the pnblic and my friends. It is good, and
those who know me, as many do in this State, as
I have lived in many parts of it, know that I
would not recommend them to nse a thing that
bad no merit, because I am opposed to quack
remedies. G. W. BROWN, M. D.

Watches. We have received one of tho new
Gold Metal Watehcs from C. E. Collins A Co., of
San Francisco. It is neatly finished, hunting
case, keeps good time and is, without donit, tho
best watch for the price that can be purchased in
San Francisco. Lit Porte Union. w
What Next? Cheaper than silver looking
and wearing like gold neither plated or galvan
ized are the new Gold Metal Watches we saw1
last week at our friend Collins. If we bad not a.
gold watch which we have to pay each year $3
to "Uncle Sam" for the privilege ef wearing wo
certainly would have a Gold Metal Watoh.
