On Saturday last, as previously announced, Vice Pres ideut Colfax, accompanied ly Messrs. IJross and Bowles, the first one of the proprietors of the Chicago Tri'jitnr, and the latter editor of the Springfield Re publican aud five ladies, arrived in this cTty c Jt route for California. Immediately after the party had dismounted at the Overland Hotel, President Colfax was 6eized by Mr. Philip Baltimore, one of Xana county's oldest settlers, and an old acquaintance, and hurried oif to the Court House, from the top or observatory of which a splendid view ot Albany Prairie is obtainable. Messrs. IJross aud Bowles '-pinted" the same way, and the party at the Court House was soon aug mented by numbers of our leading citi zens of both paities, who came to pay their respects to the man whom the vo'ice ol the people has elevated to the second highest office in this nation, and to ex tend to him ar.d those accompanying him a cordial welcome to this the fairest and loveliest portion of Oregon. A few fleet ing but pleasant moments were enjoyed by those present, our visitors passing many flattering encomiums on this por tion of Oregon and the Pacific coast gen erally, and all were sorry when the coach containing the ladies of the party, drove .in front of the building, preparatory to a continuance of the journey. Before getting into the coach, the Vice Presi dent thanked the citizens for the kind welcome sj unostentatiously extended, and expressed the hope that he would oon have the pleasure of again visiting Oregon aud' making a more prolonged stay, a wish in which all heartily joined. "With, three rousing cheers for Colfax, the party were whirled away cn their journey. Aid for tue ORniAxrs. A number of ladies of this city have formed them selves into a Soliciting Committee, their object being to solicit donations in behalf of the Oregon Children's Aid Society, of Salem. This Society will erect a pavil ion on the grounds of tts State Agri cultural Society, at Salem, during the continuance of the Fair,. in which meils will be served and all articles donated will be exposed for sale. The proceeds of the above Institution are to be devoted to procuring food and clothing for the or phan children left at the Orphan's Home, a large building recently erected for that purpose near Salem, on ground donated by the late Mrs. Parrish. The ladies constituting said committee in this county are, Mrs! J. C. 3Iendenhall, Vice President; Mrs. Betta Marshall, Secre tary j Mrs. E. A. Freeland, Correspond ing Secretary ; Mrs. Thos. Monteith, Mrs. E. A. Stanard, Albany, and Miss J. A. Elkins and Mrs. L. iialston, of Lebanon. We are requested to say to all those who wish to give in aid of this praiseworthy and benevolent enterprise, that contributions of fancy articles for the fair, or articles for the table, can be sent to Messrs. Blain & Young's store, or to Mr. E. A. Frceland, at the Post Office, or to either of the members of the Committee. As the object for which these contribu tions are solicited is a noble one, it is to be hoped that our citizens will respond liberally with provisions suitable for the table, and fancy articles that the ladies can convert into cash at their fair. Any and all appeals for benevolent enter prises hitherto to our people, hare been met with a spirit of liberality that has done them credit, and we hope that the appeal of the ladies Soliciting Committee at this time, may be met in the same liberal manner. " It is better to give than to receive." For a bran new tea-pot, of Japan tin, we tender our thanks to Mr. Tompkins, of the new stove store. Brevities. Velocipede School opened on Thursday, in Parish Hall. The "mist" opened on the lGth. On the lGth a part of our new material arrived expect the balance on next ocean steamer. The extra premiums offered by the Agricultural Association are attracting a good deal of attention, especially the pre mium offered for the best rifle shooting. Wheat is down again to 55 and GO cents per bushel. On Bellinger's first attempt to ride a velocipede, he made a regular "spread eagle" of himself. 31 r. Sam'l Young has our thauks for favors. We intend issuing our paper, present size, daily during the week of the County Pair. For finely executed job work, at the very lowest cash rates, call at the 11 KG I s TEtt office. In the last three weeks, beef has goue up two cents per pound. There is at present no lard iu this mar ket. An insect of the genus ufcr is very annoyiug about these times. We uirrv look for the resumption of navigation, should the rain coutiuue. Cocxty Fair. Only one more week intervenes ' before the opening of our County Fair. Persons who have or. in tend having articles for exhibit iou on that occasion, should see to it that all arrangements are made so that all entries can be made on the first day of the Fair. Every citizen of the county is more or less interested iu the success of these fairs. They are a sure index of the en terprise and iudustry of a community. If the exhibitions of stock, grain, veg etables, agricultural implements, etc., etc., are large and complete at the County Fair, the citizens of such county are at ouce set down as an industrious, thrifty and progressive peopie, thus gaining a high reputation abroad, and inviting immigration among them. The officers of the Society are making every effort in the way of fixing up the grounds for the convenience of exhibitors, and the offer of an extra amount of premiums, to induce a large and successful show of articles, and if our farmers and citizens generally exhibit a proportionate zeal in aiding them in carrying out their de signs, the coming Fair will be made more productive of good than any yet projected by the Society. Let every one bring something, that every department may be filled. . Have all readv for the Fair, and be there carlv. PERSONAL. L. E. Blain, Esq., of the mercantile firm of . Blain & Young, arrived home from Sau Francisco on the 15th. Their new stock is arriving. P. C Harper, of Harper & Co., started overland for 'Frisco on the lGth. He goes for a new stock of dry goods. John Barrows, Esq., who but recently left this city en route for the East, has been commissioned by Gov. George L. Woods to represent Oregon in the Na tional Convention to be held at St. Louis, Missouri, October 21st, 1SG9. This Con ven is for the purpose of inaugurating steps looking to the removal of the capi tal of the United States from Washington City. Short Handed. Sickness of our Jour. ,j the impossibility of obtaining any other help, hs compelled us to double duty this week and last. We have acted as devil, pressman, compositor, collector and editor, during the week, with what success we leave the reader to judge. However, it has been a rough week on the "old man," and if 'tis possible, he will have no more of sich in his. Accident. A little son of John Uacklcman, while playing among some sacks of wheat, broke one of his legs Exactly how the accident occurred our informant did not know, but believed one or more sacks fell on the limb, causing the fracture.
