Ilcv. S. G. Irvine left this city for
the "Kastern States the first of the week,
lie will be absent about six weeks.
Upon his return he will take charge of
the Albany College.
Our city is to have a system" of
cisterns. Work has already been com

Ferry on First street. The work is
being prosecuted by 31 r. Humphrey.
The cisterns arc to be sixteen feet across
and oiue feet deep, and will hold 1S,000,

We saw a fine merschaum pipe going
up street the other day with a young
hidy behind it. She looked almost as
shadowy as the smoke she was puffing in
clouds from between her rosy (!) lips.
Alvin P. Brock, who was found badly
"bruised, with his clothes torn from his
body, and insensible, one day last week,
died on Wednesday, and was brought
to this city and buried on Thursday.
He remained insensible until death mer
cifully released him from all his suffer
ings. . When last seen previous to the
accident, he was riding hip- harse, with
an empty bucket in his hand. The next
day his horse, with saddle still on him,
was observed among other horses in a
pasture, which excited curiosity as to the
whereabouts of the rider. Search was
made, which resulted in finding him in
the condition above mentioned. Mr.
lirock was a youmj man of good moral
liabits, industrious, liberally educated,
and had but recently been in charge of a
school in his neighborhood. lie had the
universal respect of his neighbors, who
anourn the loss of a good citizen. He
fived some twelve miles from this eity,
near Boston; on the Calipooia.
Ilcv. Joab Powell, at the "rattling of
"ebeU" on Thursday evening,' preached
in the "Court House loft." He had a
fair audience.
- Messrs. J. II. Foster & Co. are erect
ing a temporary structure on the south
side! of their flouring mills, intended for
sto.ing grain in sacks.
Since cur last report an advance often
cents per bushel is noted in wheat in this
market, the present price paid' bein 60
65 cents'.
No steamboats have reached this point
during the week, and the probabilities
of such an appearance are rather slim
On our fourth page to-day will be
found a full history of the convention
between this Government and the repub
lic of Peru, in relation to the adjustment
ot claims against the two governments
by citizens thereof. It has its interest.
Beach & Monteith received thirteen
hundred bushels of the new crop of
wheat, on Wednesday last, and it wasn't
a good day for wheat, either. :
v The "various" weather of the past few
weeks has produced coasiderablc unwell
oess throughout the county.
C. F. Gay, through Messrs. Russell &
" Elkins, received a patent for hie gang
plow, an advertisement of which appears
in the Register, on last Wednesday.
The Gay plow is the best in market.

G rapes. What! already! was our
exclamation upon the presentation to
us of huge hunches-of XJadaline grapes,
ripe and . luscious. They were raised
and presented to us by Mr. John Mil
lard, living just in the edge of town.
For this latitude we think the 10th of
August pretty early for ripe grapes, don't
you? Friend Millard's enterprising dis
position and industry will not only enrich
him, but greatly benefit the community
in which he lives, by showing what can
bo produced from our soil by theuse of
a little intelligent industry.
A Legitimate Gftowr.. The Demo
crat of last week gets off a small growl at
persons who, getting married and sending
the notice of said happy (to them) event
for publication, forget to send any cash
(ja gold dollar, for instance) to pay jhc
printer for such insertion. Well, it is
generally supposed that a merchant is
the best judge of his own goods and
it's iust so with the lnsrrried man. If
he, being the best judge, don't think his
new bargain of sufficient value to seud
the printer a dollar in cash, or its equiv-
alent,Tor announcing the happy event to
the world, we take it for -granted she
isn't worth it, or that he is an unappre-
ciative cuss, and willingly publish the
notice free gratis for nothing without
charging him a cent therefor.

That Boat. The 'high-pressure'
steamer that left this port last week un
der command of Capt. Merrill, S. S.
Mark ham, Purser, arrived at Salem in
good shape, and started on the return
voyage early the present week. The late
unheard of storms on the Willamette, it
is feared, may have stranded the vessel
on some lone island amid the rushing
waters, many rods from a hospitable
shore, or one of the "propellers" may
have "collapsed," or the empioyees "kick
ed", for higher wages or the adoption of J
the eight hour law any of which would
be the cause of a longer or shorier de
tention. The arrival of this craft is look
ed for with anxiety. .
Poisoned. We heard a rumor the
other day to the effect that a whole fam
ily, somewhere in this vicinity, had been
poisoned, and that one of the children
had died, and that the balance- of the
family were in a critical state. We weie
unable, however, to get "head or tail" of
the facts in the case, and therefore won't
say ; nothing aboutit. P.. S. We have
since learned that the name of the fam
ily poisoned is Yanatty, living somewhere
on Big Muddy.
His Opinion. The other day a geu
tleman of large business capacity and
foresight, speaking of . the prospect of
higher prices of wheat, said that if he
was provided with the necessary where
with, he would be willing to pay 65 cents
per bushel for every bushel of wheat
raised in Linn county during this season.
This is his opinion of what the prices
paid for wheat will be before next spring.
Divine Services. We are requested
to announce that the pulpit of the M. E.
church will be occupied to-morrow by
Rev. if. Bounds, President of the Wil
lamette University, at the usual morning
and evening hours. At the same place,
on the 22d, at tho usual morning hour,
Rev. Mr. Batesr of the Evangelical
Church, will hold services.
Gone from our Gaze. Our worthy'
County Judge, S. A. Johns, wishing to
extend his business, doubtless, has formed
a partnership with Mrs. S. C. -Smith.
Rev; Dr. TIill done the "jaw work," at
the residence of the lady, in this city.
on Thursday last May their -union be a
pleasant and happy one.
Them Cistern. On yesterday, the
cistern on First ptreet had progressed to
the depth of twelve feet, where water
was "struck." The intention now is to
sink it three feet further, a total of fifteen
feet, if water does not prevent. -
Smoky.- We are still "pestered" with
smoke, which makes the day gloomy and
night gloomier. We need - rain to drive
off the- smoke and settle the dost.

well, and seems to fulfill all the requirements ot a
high-priced watch. Tbe chain sent with this

Watches. We have received one of the new
Gold Metal Watches from C. E. Collins A Co., of
San Francisco. It is neatly finished, hunting
case, keeps good time and is, without doubt, the
best watch for the price that can be purchased in
San Francisco. La Porte Union.
..WnAT... Next ? Cheaper than silver- looking
and wearing like gold neither plated or galvan
ised are the new Gold Metal Watehes we saw
last week at our friend Collins'. If we bad not a
gold watch which we have to pay each year $2
to "Uncle Sam" for the privilege of wearing we
certainly would have a Gold Metal' Watch.

This is an entirely new plan, giving Insurers
the largest return ever made by any Company in
the same period.
The Company give credit when desired, of from
33 to 50 per eent. of premiums.
An illustration of the advantages of the credit
system as practiced by-this Company, is the case
of H. C;"Co, of Yonkers, who insured bin life in
this Company for $5,000, in February, 1857, pay
ing the whole premium in easb, $118 ; at the end
of the first year it was impossible for him to raise
the amount of the premium then due, in cash, and
ho came to the office prepared to surrender the
policy. Being told that he could give his note
for the premium, he did io. His death occurred
in less than seven months. His family are now
in the enjoyment of the amount insured. Had
he insured in an "all cash" Company, they would
have Iseen left unprovided for.
This is,-in itself, a complete refutation of the
absurd statement of "all cash" Companies, that
it is injurious for the insurer to have the power to
give a not under any circumstances.

"GAY?' PLOWS,
Manufactured and sold for the very low price of

1 Plow commends it favorably to the speeial
EUiico of every farmer. It possesses a decided
sunerioritv ?v!r all pther plows now in nse. Tho
wheels are four feet in diameter, -n'i run VO tho
unplowcd land. Its entire construction is in no
way complicated. - The plow is managed in every
manner with ease, and requires only two lovers,
to be used in making any alteration. The supe
riority of the '"Gay" Plow will be clearly shown
by- the following certificate :
We, the undersigned, citizens of Linn county,
Oregon, having purc&ased and used upou our
farms the "Gay", Plow, hereby certify that the
same has given us entire satisfaction. Its facility
for adjusting to suit the depth of furrow without
moving from the seat, is -simple and easy. We
like the plow for its draught, because the same is
brought to bear directly upon the plow-beam in
stead of the carriage ; also, because it is strong
and durable, all except the wood-work being con
structed of wrought iron no castings are used.
The wheels running upon the solid land is an ad
vantage over other gang-plows, in strikinr off
land and in plowing, not having to make the noe
essary changes in the machinery, and the seat is
always level, not thr wing tho driver forward or
sideways as in other plows. Better work and
more of it can be accomplished by the use of this
Plow than by hand.
We take pleasure in recommending the "Gay"
Pl.ow to our brother farmers, as one having no
