The Endless Match A very use
f'uf article, called tbe Endless Match,
says the S. F. Times, has made its ap
pearance in market and is. attracting
considerable attention. It consists of a
neat tin tube, about three inches in length
and a littlo less than a quarter of an inch
in diameter. In this is rrlacJ a niatclr,
which is run out of the open end of the
tube, by 'ticsins of a slot, about one eip-hth
of an inch, when it is desired to light it.
;ly a jrcni'o friction it i.s isinifcd the
same ns any 'ther mutt h and will conlin
ue to burn by pushing it out Uw !y. 3y
pulling tli nuiteh buck, or covering tho
open end of the ease with the cap used
to protect, it while bckg carried in the
pocket, it is easily extinguished. To
relight if, needs but a gentle friction us
before, and so ou until the entiru match
is consumed. One -of the great advant
ages of the new invention is, that the
Juatch cuuuot be blown out, aud it can be
lighted after being immersed ia water.
A blind horse wandered into White
River at Indianapolis, aud getting beyond
his depth, swam around iu a circle, try
ing to find his way out. His distress
Attracted another horse not far away on
jhe bank, who first went to the water's
edge and tried to direct the blind horse
by weighing. Failing iu this he took to
the water, and swam out. to his relief,
and after, swimming around him for
fiearly a quarter of au hour, Cua'ly got
tbe blind horse to understand- in what
direction the land lay, and the' two horses
came to sluro side by" side, amid the
-Cheers'of upwards of one hundred per
sons, who had become spectators.
i The experiments, whicji have been
lhado over the telegraph lines between
Harvard College and San Francisco, show
that tho traveling time required by elec
tricity is as follows, from Boston : To
Buffalo and back, 0.10 seconds ; to Chi
cago and back, 0.20 seconds ; to Omaha
and back 0.33 seconds ; to Salt Lake and
back, 0.54 seconds; to Virginia City
and back, 0.70 seconds ; to San Francis
co and-back, 0.4 seconds. j
! One of our exchanges reports-that half
a dozen young ladies are said to make a
living in Nashville (Tt-nn.), by donning
new and fashionable dresses on fine duj-s..
aud promenading the most frequented
streets. The git Is must have fine fitr
ures, and be good looking. A good
"walker" is paid t per day.
To make an amusing sympathetic ink,
mix lemon and onion juice. Writiug or
pictures made with this mixture on plaiu
white paper will, when dry, be invisible.
But oa warming the paper before a , fire,
the lines-will appear in brown tints.
Very pretty effects may be thus produced.
