Ilunah fur the Second, Third and Fifth of July ! Ociioco. I'rotu Mr. Norcross, who arrived iu this city from Oehoco valley last week aud started on his return Tues day, we learn that the road leading from Lebanon to that valley is iu good travel ing coudition. As the fall of snow was nuusually light last winter, there is .but very little mud to be met with in the mountains where, usually, at this time of J'ear, the road is generally heavy. ' The Road Company have been doing home ood work on the road. Mr. Nor cross has no very high anticipations of Ochoco as an agricultural district, but ns a stock rauge I13 speaks very highly of it. The valley is pretty much all claimed, but a large number of the claimauts have not as yet put iu an ap pearance. Crops. We have been assured by several of our agricultural friends throughout the county that, if a continu ance of the present heated term prevails, with no rain-fall, the yield of wheat per acre will be much less than that of form er years. They tell us that a little rain will do an immense amount of good, while a heavy rain-fall would be pro ductive of much harm. i .ni.i c hum , uivi i.uemcu. i x L iiftut Army Worms. A gentleman stated to us a few days since that he passed over, a short distance from this city, a perfect "slew" of army worms. He said they were crossing a lane, and literally covered the ground for a space of fifty or one hundred feet wide. As we have heard no other intimation of similar sights from any quarter, we hope the gen tleman was mistaken, or that the hot sun of the last fews day has played tho "army" out. Temperance. Hand-bills .have been issued calling for a Temperance Mass Meeting, to be held at the camp-ground near Lebanon, on Friday, July 9th, 1869. The exercises will consist of speaking, singing, etc.' Able speakers have been secured for tho occasion. The people of Linn and adjoining coun ties are invited to attend, bringing with them their own "grub," and participate 8 on the bceasion. : ;' ' J ! : ,: Home Again. -Dr. Alexander ar rived at his home, inthis city on Mon day evening's stage, looking and feeling well. The -Doctor has been absent about two raooth.3 on a visit to the States, and we judge from "the expres sion he madethatj he , wouldn't give ten dollars for the whole country back there that Oregon suits him; pretty well. : Webfoot is hard to beat, that's a fact. ,zz t . - i Campmeezino. Yes, it's the biggest d;iy in thsj year, and we should teach our neighbor's children to venerate and cherish it above ail other days except the day set asiJc by the great Jeh vah as a day of universal rest. Let every body celebrate. Rishoi Morris. The Kt. He v. W. Morris, the newly appointed lii.ihop of Oregon, hold divine service.1 at the Con gregational church in this city ou Tues day night last, to a fair audience. The i:!iop is rather a liae looking trentlciuati, of medium stature, and is apparently 40 ysjrs-otage. liis .style of delivery is rapid, emphatic, and each word is dis tinctly enunciated. Previous to his selection for the present position the reverened gentleman had been officiating fur several years as Rector of St. Maik's church, Geriuantown, Pennsylvania. He was chosen Bishop of the Diocese of Oregon at the General Convention held in New York in October lat, when the House of Bishops chose him as especially adapted fjr this post, lie succeeds the late Bishop Scott, who died about two years since on his way fiotn Portlaud to New York, when almost in sight of his destination. The Bishop was assisted in the service by Rev. Mr. -Bunnell, Rector of the Episcopal Church in Sa'em. Public Schools. The first quarter of District School No. 5, for the current year, ended on Thursday, July 1st, 1SG0 at which time puplic examination of the scholars in the various branches pursued by thtm during the quarter was had. The examination was very satisfactory, showing a good degree of progress by the school, and entitles those in charge to high commendation for the zealous man ner in which they have performed their arduous and thankless duties. The sec ond quarter commences on Monday, July 12th. . Personal. Rt. Rev. Bishop Wistar Morris, with Rev. Mr. Bunnell, called on us Tuesday last. We rather like the Bishop's "style," and think he's just the man for the place. Thos. F. Smith, Esq., of " Warm Springs Indian Reservation, called on us Tuesday. Says they arc "squaring up" preparatory to handing over the Reser vation to the new military appointee. Messrs. Jerry Driggs, Linsey Hill and others, who left here on a pleasure aqd gold hunting excursion some weeks since, returned on Wednesday. The party enjoyed the trip hugely, but didn't "strike" them gold mine. ; Grub. If you want a "square meal" go , to the new Exchange. Restaurant, just fitted up on. First street, adjoining Ilauck & Meyers' billiard saloon and you'll be sure to get it. - The host, Mr. E. C. Holden, has "been there" before, and knows exactly how to get up grub in shape ' - -- - - No Service. We are requested ; to state, as campmeeting holds over Sab bath to-morrow there "will "be no services in : the M. E. Church in this city on that day. 1 Good Boy: Ma&ter Charley Elkins, on Wednesday last, presented us with , s tjnantityof goosberries, currants and rasp berries. f The gooseberries were "whop-pers"-nearly as-large as black walnuts. Tho Company give credit when desired, of from 33 to 50 per cent, of premiums. s - ' An illustration of the advantages of the credit system" as practiced by thir Company, is the case of H. C. Being told that he coald give his note for the premium, he did so. : His death occurred in less than seven months. His family are now in the enjoyment of the amount insured. Had he insured in an "all cash" Company, they would have been left unprovided for.- This is, in itself, a complete refutation of tbo absurd statement of -all cash" Companies, that it is injurious for the insurer to have the power to give a note under any circumstances. - C. p.
