Local .a.iivix.s .. Foa Ocnoco and Crooked llivtu. A company, consisting of Messrs. Jerry Driggs, Win. Dngjrs, A. Gregg, George Patterson, Abe Miller, J. Linsey Hill, And one or two others, have made ar rangements to start for Oclioco and the headwaters of Crooked river, early next week. Their ohject is two-fold, the first being For health, and tee second for gold they intend prospecting for the gold j diggiugs generally known as the old "Emigrant Discover-." Report has it that a party of emigrants found fabulous ly rich gold diggings somewhere in that tection of country years ago, but before the discovery could be made available, were drivcu out by hostile Indians. We hope these gentlemen may be eminently successful in accomplishing both objocts of their trip, and that they may return with '"'dead loads" of chiekaiain. Go for it. Pleasure Seeking. Our citizens are already talking of forming parties to visit various poiuts of interest in easy reach of this city during the coming "heated term." Yaquina lay will be visited by large numbers from this vici nage the present season, to enjoy the in vigorating breezes of old oceau and luxu riate ou wild game, oysters, etc. A party of gentlemen taik of leaving in a few days ou a hunting and fising excursion to the mountains. Several ladies and gentlemen go to Knox's Uutte to-day, to enjoy a picuic. The roads are splendid, the weather just right, aud as business is not overly rushing, now is the time to enjoy, a jaunt into the rural districts. G'lanir! Another Invention. The model of a newly invented rotary engine, made entirely of steel, iu complete working order, was forwarded to Washington on Wednesday last, with the-application for a patent, through Mcssr?. llusstll & Elkins, of this city. Mr. J. C. -Moss-holder, of Lebanon, a practical machinist, is the inventor. The model was a beau tiful piece of mechanism, and is decidedly the "biggest thing" yet got up by Linn county inveutive genius. Mr. M. thinks his invention will prove to be the most poweriui, ana ul ine same time simplest and cheapest engine yet in use. Red Wagon. A bran new two-story red wagon drove into town Thursday morning. It was a handsome vehicle, and, as was patent to all the world, con tained bottles of "Dr. J. W. Murray's im proved Magic Oil," "Lung and Liver Balsam," etc. The Doctor who held the ribbons himself was on his way up the valley, distributing his valuable medi cines for the benefit of the afflicted, and at the same time benetitiug his own health. lie left with us samples of his various compounds, enough to start a young drug store. Many persons through the valley, acquainted with the Doctor and the value of his medicines, will hail his presence among them with pleasure. Editorial. Ciianoe. Last week's Democrat contained the announcement that H. M. Abbott had vacated the edito rial chair of that paper. We are in formed that C. 13. Bellinger, formerly of the Salem Arena, will hereafter sling ink for the Democrat. Abbott has our congratulations on his escape from a thankless, tread-mill life. HoTELING. From the Oregonian we learn that Messrs. Sewall & Sprenger, of the Cosmopolitan, have associated them selves with Major Cook, and bought the furniture of the Western Hotel of Port land. It is understood that Mr. Sewall will retain charge of the Cosmopolitan, while Messrs. Sprenger & Cook will man age the Western. These gentleman have made themselves popular as hotelists, and the fomer good reputation of the houses over which they now hold control will be increased. Services at the Court House. Rev. I. D. Driver, agent of the American Bible Society, will deliver a discouise at the Court House in this city to-morrow at 11 o'clock A. M. After the discourse, a collection will be taken up for the ben efit of the Bible Society. Mr. Driver is one of the most eloquent divines on the Pacific coast. Hand bills were issued calling a meeting at the Court House on Monday night for the purpose of ' taking the eeuse"of our people on the subject of a public celebra tion on the coming 4th of July. As the hour approached, it was suggested that the Engine House was a more convenient place, aud quite likely to contain all who would answer to the "call," and therefore the meeting was held there. Afcer some twenty or thirty persons had put in an appearance at the Engine House, the meeting was organized by the election of Dave. Thompson, Esq., Chairman, aud Coll. Van. Clevc, Secretary. It was unanimously resolved by the meeting that we will have a celebration on the 4th, and to that end a committee of eleven, consisting of Messrs. Jas. Cowan, John Brown, Richard Fox, S. E. Young, A. N. Arnold, John Parker, John Metzler, Mr. Upton, C. Van Cleve, Leo. Fox and John Barrows, were appointed as a Committee of Arrangements, to re port at an adjourned meeting, to be held at the Court House this (Saturday) even ing. The question as to whether we should have a picuic affair or an old-fash ioned barbecue, was debated at some length, but final action in the matter was deferred until the meeting this even ing. If our citizens wish to celebrate the 4th in a becoming manner, let them come out to the meeting to-night, and thus give evidence of it by their presence there. It wili be a good deal owing the number at -the meeting to-uijlit whether we celebrate or not. The day on which to celebrate will also come up, as the 4th happens on Sunday. Our voice is for Saturday the 3d. Personal. Judge Baber arrived in our city the first of the week. At pres ent he is in Portland, but will return in a few days to take up his residence again anions us. The Jude is as full of life as ever. Geo. R. The new method of washing clothes without labor as done by the "Automatic Clothes AVasher aud Boiler," is attracting, as might naturally be supposed, a good deal of attention. This remarkable machine continues to show to astouished visitors, whose numbers are daily increasing, bow simply and easily a large days washing can be effectually ac complished in comparatively short time by this labor saviug in veutiou. From tho Cleveland Paindeaier, March 12th, 1S69 : "The Automatic Clothes AVasher. Noth ing in the way of a patent has for a long time awakened such a general interest, as the above named invention. AV ashing without labor by the mere force of heat, is a step so important and new that it naturally excites a great deal of inquiry. This is an entirely new plan, giving Insurers the largest return ever made by any Company in the same period. The Company give credit when desired, of from 33 to 50 per cent, of premiums. An illustration of the advantages of the credit system as practiced by this Company, is the case of 11. C. Coe, of Yonkers, who insured his life in this Company for $5,000, in February, 1857, pay ing the whole premium in cash, $118 : at the en a of the first year it was impossible for him to raise the amount of the premium then due, in cash.and he came to the office prepared to surrender the policy. Being told that he could give his note for the premium, he did so. His death occurred in less than seven months. His family are now in the enjoyment of the amount insured. Had he insured in an "all cash" Company, they would have been left unprovided for. This is, in itself, a complete refutation of the absurd statement of "all cash" Companies, that it is injurious for the insurer to have the power to give a note under any circumstances. C. P.
