fortable boarding places in the city.
J. E. Smith has opened a restaurant
on First street, iu the building formerly
occupied by Mrs. Smith as a millinery
cstaDiisuniein.
So far as we know, at present there is
neither tailor or tailoring establishment
in this city.
Several loads of wool have made their
-appearance on our streets during the
week.
Base Ball Club meets this evening at
5 o'clock sharp, for practice.
Mr. Westfall is slowly convalescing.
The operatives at the sash, blind and
door factory ot Messrs. Althouse & Co.,
havo been as busy as bees during the
week, filling orders and finishing up new
work.
The plowing match for single plows
come off at the Fair grounds at 10 o'clock
this morning. Let ail who can, attend.

Excelsior Brick Machine. We
took occasion to visit the brick yard of
John S. McCallister, one day during the
present week, and while there examined
the new brick machine, the invention of
Mr. McCallister. The machine is of
very simple but ingenious construction,
and for the manufacture of brick is far
superior to anything we have ever seen,
being able to turn out 25,000 brick per
day with a sufficient number of laborers
to off-bear the brick. We were informed
that one of these machines, worked by
four hands, in this city recently, turned
out 12,000 brick in one day. We exam
ined a kiln containing several thousand
of these brick, nicely burned. They were
very regular in size' and smoothness of
surface, neat, well pressed corners, and
were just such brick as a mason delights
to see in fact are far superior in every
way to the ordinary brick made by hand.
The inventor, Mr. John S. 3IcCallister,
of this place, has applied for a patent, as
wo stated some weeks since, which he
will undoubtedly obtain, as nothing like
: it haj ever been invented.. One of the
machines, sold to parties in Salem, on
the first trial, with six hands, made 1,000
brick in 27 minutes. Of course, tbe
purchasers are highly pleased with it.
Another of these machines has been sold
and forwarded to the Dalles, to Mr.
Abrams, one of the contractors on the
U. S. Mint, building at that place. One
of these machines has also been ordered
McCallister
build in"
and completed at this place. The price
of the Excelsior at the factory is 300,
complete, mounted on wheels and ready
for use. Brick can be manufactured by
using one of these machines at nearly
one-half less than the ordinary cost of
molding by hand, and the amount thus
saved would, in a few weeks' work, pay
for a machine in the reduced cost of
hands required to manufacture the brick.
We advise persons in this line of busi
ness to apply at once to J. S. McCallister
& Co. for one of these machines ; full
satisfaction is guaranteed to those desir
ing to purchase.
Returned. Chas. Harper, Esq., has
returned to this city from a protracted
visit to Puget Sound and San Francisco.
In his journeyings he found no place
whose future prospects seemed brighter
than Albany. He has returned satisfied
lo stay, and has brought with him a stock
of new and fashionable goods, which he
is now opening for the inspection of his
..friends and the public generally, in the
building adjoining Mr. John Connor, on
' .First street. Drop in and get a sight at
the latest styles.
Book Agent. Mr. G. W. Brock is
canvassing this and adjoining counties
for subscribers to Alexander H. Stevens
history of the rebellion, and McKenzie's
Three Thousand Receipts. The latter
work is said to be invaluable to farmers;
of the former we cannot speak, not hav
ing had the pleasure of its perusal.
Live Insurance. The advertisement
of the Manhattan Life Insurance Com
pany, of New York, appears in our col
umns this morning, C P. Ferry, General
Agent, and A. J. Gross, Special Agent.
This is a number one Company, and fds
rates of insurance and general manner of
doing business, commends it to public
patronage. Mr. Gross, while acting as
special agent for this company, is also
prosecuting IuJian war claims before the
department at Washington. Persons
have claims far horses furnished or lost
during the Indian campaigns, which have
not been adjusted, are advised to put
them into the hands of Mr. Gross, who
will see to their collection.
Lost or Stolen. Mr. William Mc
Coy, of Uiownsville, warns the pulie nut
to purchase certain promissory notes,
drawu in favor cf Samuel Wilson, in
October last, by parties mentioned in
the advcrtueireut, as said notes have been
lost by, or stolen from him, aud that he
will proceed to collect the amounts of the
several notes when due.

and in this line, as well as in everything
else he undertakes, he is a success.
For Washing Clothes. Attention
is directed to the advertisement of the
"Automatic Clothes-Washer and Boiler,"
in to-day's paper. The genuine merit,
cheapness and simplicity of this labor
saving vessel is causing it to become a
universal favorite wherever it has been
used. It will do a large washing in an
incredible short time, and do it well. Call

and Hackleman. The Mayor being
absent the Recorder presided.
Minutes of the previous meeting were
read and approved.
On motion, the Council proceeded to
hear and correct grievances in assess
ments, and after hearing and adjusting
all claims, and making all deductions
claimed, the assessment roll was accepted
from the Recorder showing the amount
of property assessed in the city to be
577,077.
On motion, the tax was levied at 5
mills on the dollar for the present year.
Council adjourned.
