J3ATU11DAY, APRIL 24, 1869. LOCAL ;AJF,l?Ai:R.S Su Frwcuco Legal Tender talc 4 T7177j New York Gold quotaiious 1311 Cbanjeof Time. At the solicitation of parties iu this cit- through the ac commodating agent of the P. T. Co., Mr. John li. Monteitb, the tiuno for starting on the Salem excursion has been changed. .Instead of leaving this city Sabbath after noon at 2 o'clock, the steamer will leave ner wharf at precisely 4 o'clock on Mon day morning, the 20th instant. This, although it necessitates early rising, will meet the wishes of a large proportion of those going to the Odd Fellows celebra-j tion at Salera on that day. However, it may be well enough for all to understand that the steamer will start at 4 o'clock harp, mad those who calculate ou nay delay after that time will be disappointed. Tickets for the round trip will be SI 50, to be had of the agent at the P. T. Co.'s office. Literary Exhibition. The literary exhibition given by the scholars connect ed with the Albany Collegiate Institute on Friday eveniag26th. inst., was greet ed by the presenco of a largo audience. The declamations, orations, essays, dia logues, etc , were well delivered, and "brought down" the audience every whiz. The big "Injun," "Ilyas Tyce, of Warm Springswas nearly lightning on Jargon, and succeeded in "localizing" very well. "The principal feature of the entertain ment was the vocal and instrumental -music, Miss Kate Conner presiding at the melodion, assisted by Miss Ada Beach, Miss Nellie Cavinas, Mr. George Price and Mr. TT. A. McCornack, of Eugene. The College paper was well "read by its editor, Mr. Frank Beach, and -contained well written articles. The exbition was a success. Comx Back. Our old friend, Dr. O. P. S. Plutnnicr, and , family, arrived ia our city the first of the week, from Ros burg, where they have been residing during the winter. We are happy to announce that the Doctor intends to re main with us permanently, which will be most welcome news to bis . numerous friends in this city and Linn county. He will still continue as Superintendent of the telegraph line. As a "wire work er" the Doctor has no .superior on the coast. An Additional Teacher. The at tendance at the District School in this city is so large that an additional teach er is required, and the Directors have selected Miss Annie Smith as such addi tional teacher. The selection is a good one. The new teacher euters upon her duties on Monday. With such a corps of teachers in our public school, parents coct look for the rapid advancement of their children in useful knowledge. - New Aqxnt. Mr. WiltiamTbnrman ia the new resident telegraphist in this burg. He is a good operator besides be ing a genial fellow. Life Insurance. We have several times adverted to the benefits of life insurance. An event which recently transpired shows the advantages of insur ance, and puts the matter in a light which will be readily comprehended by all. Mr. C. P. Ferry, General Agent for one of the Life Insurance companies, ame to this city a tew days ago, to pay to the widow of our late townsman, M. W. Mack, the amount due her on the life policy of her husband, amounting to 94,623. As Mr. Ferry passed through Salem on his way to this city, he paid over to the widow of J. G. Martin ex actly the same amount . of money on a similar policy. By a singular concidence Mr. Mack and Mr. Martin insured their lives at about the same time for the same amount, and both died at about the same time. The premium paid in each case -was $376. Here arc benefits conferred, by paying but a' small amount of money, that can be understood and appreciated. Our advice to all is, take out a policy. Wo are insured. Somebody Sold. A local item in the Unionist informs us that the Capital En gine Company, of Salem, had received and accepted a challenge from Albany Engine Company, to try the merits of their respectivo machines. The Foreman wishes us to say that the officers and members of the Albany Fire Company have never sent a challenge nor author ized any one else to challenge the Salem Fire Company, or any other company in their name, for the simple reason that they have no engine as yet, and grave doubts as to their having one soon are entertained. When the Company are in possession of an engine, and have had some drill in its use, a challenge might be sent or accepted with some show of propriety. At present our boys are not on it. Death. Again has death made h!s eavaace in our community, and we are compelled to chronicle the mournful intell'gence of two deaths in one night that of Mrs. Abbott, wife of the editor o the Democrat, and Dr. Whitson, living ia the vicinity of this city. Mrs. Abbott had been lingering with the consumption for months. She breathed her last on Thursday morning. The funeral took place on Friday. Mr. Abbott and family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. Liberality. Ia conversation tire other day, some one suggested that as Mr. Westfall, the gentleman whose leg was broken in two places recently by a kick from a horse, was a poor man with, a family dependent on his labor for sup port, something ought to be done to re lieve :him from any embarrassment which might result from a long confinement to ih is bed. Acting on the hint. Mr. E. B. iPurdom started with a subscription pa iper, and soon had collected quite a little un for the relief of the unfortunate .man. When the money -was presented by Mr. Purdom, Mr. Westfall was so overcome with the unexpected kindness -(hat he wept like a child. Such acts of 3iberalitj speak loudly in favor of a com anaaiiy, and are never forgotten by the recipient. - : - "a . ; McTATiONy Our, old hotelist and a -"rich specimen" on general principles, J. B. Sprenger, Esq., has removed to Port lasd, having bought out the interest of 3fj. Cook in the .Cosmopolitan 'Hotel of -that city. We are sorry to lose the gen ial presence of Jake, but are pleased to know that he has "struck ile" so soon. The "Cosmopolitan" will hereafter be Bader the management of Sewall & Sprenger, two of the' 'most successful hotelists cm the PaciSp elope. - They un derstand how to keep a hotel in the best sense t the word. Present Mayor Standard ; Council men Cundiff, Mealey Coniley and Hack Ieman. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. Messrs. Abbott & Brown presented bill of $18 75, for city printing for the quarter ending March 31st, 1869, which was allowed. A petition was received signed by A. Fox and Frank Parton, asking the Coun cil to order the graveling of Third street between Culapooia and Vine streets, similar to Second street,, and tlfat the stumps be removed. The petition was granted, the property-holders ordered to remove the stumps, and that the gravel ing be done by the 20th of June next. Ordered that the .Marshal fill all the streets, where they cross Second, that may be necessary, according to the best of his judgment, and that the same be done as cheap as possible. Ou motion, a committee of three were appointed, Comley, Mealey and Hackle man, to ascertain the best mode of drain ing the water from Ferry street, between Second and Third streets. Ordered that the Recorder give notice to receive bids atthe next meeting of the Council for graveling the crossings on Second street. A committee of three, Hackleraan, Comley and Mealey, was appointed to procure the legal advice of a competent . i . - . lawyer in regard to assessing ana taxin the city property. - Council adjourned to meet on 1-riday (last night) evening, at t o clock. It pays to be jolly, and don't pay to be otherwise. Jolly people have a good time, and Ions faced ones don't. Be sides, your dismal dolts demoralize Who wants to be where laughter is a sin, and joking a crime?" It would be a qood thing if dismal people died off early; bet ter tor them and other people. But their tenacity of life is something wonderful. Such people rarely die. They are whif fed off finally by some little eddy of a maelstrom. Rimovted. The telegraph' ofSoe ha removed touiltabldel & Co.'s atom. Personal. Maj. Cook, late of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Portland, called on U3 Monday. The Major is one of the handsomest men in Portland, and caused many an ! while here. ' Dr. Alexander started East on the first of the week. We wish him a pleas ant trip and a safe return. Messrs. Jo. Nixon and Mr. Mont goaaery left for White Pine, on same date. May good fortune attend them.' lit. is. luce and lYillie were in town Wednesday. Butter. Mr. E. W. Pike, who we spoke of some time since as intending to go into the dairy business, has got fairly to work, and is now making a superior article of butter for table use. A speci men of butter from his dairy, left at our office, is as nice, yellow, solid, sweet but ter as we ever saw in any country. Mr Pike is at present making seventy pounds of this kind of butter each week, and will increase the amount as rapidly as the demand requires. Pcoplo who want good butter can get it of Mr. Pike. S. S. Mayday Picnic. We are re quested to state that those intending to go to the Sunday School Picnic on next Saturday should bo at Hackleman's grove by ten o'clock A. M. At that hour a short address will be deliverd for the benefit of tho children, after which they will be at liberty to choose their own mode of passing the time. Mr. Fox, it is understood, will take the swing out to the grove for the amusement of the little ones. It is expected that those who want refreshments will bring them come provided to "eat themselves 1" Should the weather prove favorable, a happy time may be -expected for the young folks. "- - : .. '" " r -. Frost. Evidences of a big white frost could be observed everywhere on Thursday morning. Ice . was formed four inches (set up endwise) in lengthi tude, Wednesday night. Strawberbies. No fresh strawber ries have made their appearance in our market as yet. Fire Engine Our new fire engine hasn't . arrived. When it does we'll chronicle the fact. . ALBANY RETAIL MARKET. Alba.nt.
