SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1809. ' San Francisco Legal Tender rates.. New York Gold quotations 13l Brief Mention. Fire meeting to night. B. li. Club meets for practice at 4J o'clock this afternoon. Splendid weather has prevailed during the week. District school commences on the 12th inst. Telegraph operator, Mr. Win. Rice, left us on Friday. Uis place is at pres ent occupied by Mr. Egbert Browu. Mr. John Irving is putting up a nice picket fence around his new purchase on Washington street. Good butter comaiands filty cents per pound, aud is scarce in this market at that price. From present appearances the wheat crop ot Linn the present season, will be larger than that of last. Many of our farmers are holding on to their .wheat, and declare they will .never sell until better prices obtain. Filty cents is the quotation here. I)r. D. B. Rice has removed from this city to Salem, tv fiil a Professor's Chair in the medical department of the Willam ette University. Mr. J. II. Foster has been elected to a seat in the Board of Directors of the O. 3. Railroad (cast side,) and will look after the interests of Albany in the mat ter of railroads. F, W, Folsom, the gentlemanly inter nal revenue collector for the 5th district of Oregon, visited our city during the forepart of the week. He intends visit ing us again in about a month. Uncle Sam has no better or more faithful oSieer. t BaicK Making Machine. Mr. John S. McCallister has iuvented a ma chine for making brick, a model of which we had the pleasure of examining. It is a very simple affair, and the only wonder :3 when one examines it, why it has not been "dropped on" before now. Mr. . McCallister owns a brick yard just in the edge of this city, on the bank of the Willamette river, and last season, with a machine somewhat similar to the model , spoken of above, molded 59,000 as good brick as we have seen in the State. lie says, if properly manned, the machine as now constructed will make 25,000 brick per day, and they will bo superior to any heretofore manufactured. The beauty of the " Excelsior," as he styles the inven tion, is its simplicity, rendering its management and repairing, should any be needed, possible to the dullest com prehension. It is a valuable labor-saving machine, and we hope the proprietor will ' realize " handsomely. Leo Broken. On Thursday after noon Mr. F. M. Westfall met with a dangerous and painful accident. lie was engaged in loading lumber on to his dray at Comlcy's mill, when the animal attached to the dray started to run. In attempting to stop the animal Mr. West fall became entangled with the lines, and received a kick on the right leg and nip, which knocked him down, the dray " passing over him. The leg is broken in two places, about four inches apart, and - is a dangerous as well as painful wound. Drs. Tate and Alexander rendered im mediate surgical aid, and Mr. Westfall, " at last accounts, was resting easy. School Election. The election held in this city, on Monday, at the District Schoolhouse, for School District No. 5, for one Director and a Clerk, re sulted in the election of John Conner, .Esq., as Director, td Bervo for three jears, and A. N.Arnold, Esq., Clerk. The contest was close, Mr. Arnold having bat two majority. The proposed tax of -$200, to be levied on the District for the purpose of repairing the Schoolhouse, " etc., was voted down. The amount has jor will be raised by subscription. Plowing Match. A plowing Match will come off on the grounds of the Linn County Agricultural Association, on Sat urday, April 24 th, at 2 o'clock P. M. The Association offers two premiums, ten .and five dollars, and invites competition from anjr county in' the State. There will. doubtless be a lively competition be tween the gang-plow men, and some good work will be executed. Those who attend will have a good chance to sec tested the various excellencies of the plows in competition. - Sabbath Services. The Rev. T.J. TVilson, late of Michigan, now of Salem, , will preach in the U. P. Church on to morrow at 11 o'clock A. M r - Railroad Matters. The Directors of the Oregun Central Railroad (east side) held a meeting at Salem the pres ent week. Five more Directors were added to tbe Board. An election for officers to serve during the ensuing year resulted as follows : Col. I. R. Moorcs, President j Greenbury Smith, Vice President; Geo. E. Cole, Secretary; Hon. E. N. Cooke, Treasurer. The contractor, Ben. Hoiliday, was present, and declared his unfaltering determina tion to build the road. He stated that there was no railroad iron obtainable in the couutry, and that all the manufac tories were engaged with orders four months ahead. There was railroad iron enough on its way from Liverpool to build thirty miles of road, and he had offered an advance of eight dollars per ton for it, but as yet was not sure of its obtainanco. The general feeling seemed to be that prospects were flattering for an early completion of at least a portion of the road. As to the railroad coming to Albany, the resolution passed at a previous meeting of tho Board, and pub lished in this paper at the time, still re mains in full lorcc, and a majority of the Board, it is understood, favor the propo sition ; and all that remains for those interested iu the matter in this city, is to see to it that the 30,000 is forthcomin, Tim sum of thirty thousand dollars is a very small matter in comparison with the benefits that will accrue to Albany and her citizens in the completion of a rail road through her borders. With the certainty of a railroad, Albany would double her population in a few months, business would atrain resume its wouted briskness, and the check which our city has received through " uncertainties,' would be changed to glorious realization in a future of progression and prosperity. Eyes and Ears. Dr. T. L. Golden publishes a card in this morning's issue. The Doctor's reputation in this class of diseases is first-class, and those who have had treatment at his hands in this city uniformly speak ia his" praise. Several stubborn cases have been entirely cured by him. Persons afflicted with diseases of the eyes or cars arc referred to Dr. Golden for treatment. City Council Met Thursday eve ning, April 8th, 1869. Present, Coun cilmen Nixon, Marshal, Comley and Hackleman. The Mayor being absent, the Recorder presided. Minutes of last meeting read and approved. The Treasurer presented his quarterly report, which was adopted. lhe .treasurer presented a bin oi $20 20, for perceutege on money re ceived and paid out, which was allowed. lhe Recorder presented a bill of for services as Recorder during the last quarter, which was allowed. uco. Patterson presented a bill ot 5ii for putting down cross-walk, which was allowed. I A petition was received, signed by N. Price, Peter Schlosser, G. 11. Bartges, and others, asking the Council to order Second street graveled twenty Feet wide in the center, and, on motion, it was 1 .Ill ordered tnat tne property-nomers on Second street be required to gravel said Second street ten feet wide (commencing at the center), four inches deep, in front of their respective property, and that said graveling be completed by tho 15th day of June, 1SG9. ' On motion, it was ordered that the Marshal have the necessary grading done on Second street, from the west side of Mill street ti where the county road in tersects said Second street, and . also make the necessary repairs of cross walks on said Second street. On motion, Councilmen Hackleman, Comley and Marshal were appointed a Committee to arrange some appropriate ceremonies for receiving the fire engine when it shall appear.
