t - ' -- 0 SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1S69: XiOCAL. AFFAIRS Baa Kranoieo Lcal Tender rotes...... New V:k titfld quotations 77o)77i 131i Tilfi Excursion On Tuesday lasf, rai aa "untuitigateJ" success The ex cursion was conceived aaJ executed for the purpose of affording our citizens a 'breathing ppell" at small cost of time an J money, and at the same time to cre ntc a fund to enable the lure Company of Albany to famish their new engine house, uo-.v iu tho course of completion on SeeouJ between Ferry and liroadalbin street.. lot:i "idees" were accomplished. A goodly number of Albany's fair women and brave mea were ,;on time" with bas kets of refreshments (which, by the way, vrcre never opened), and the general ap pearance of having fisei themselves fur a "ood tiaio." Just before the steamer Ileliance, which had been generously tendered to tho Fire Company, free of charge, for the occasion, through Hon. A. A. McCully, FresiJcat of the P. T. Co., had tooted her last whistle, two L:iii", Mrs. J. C. Mendenhail and Mrs. M. V. Brown, appeared on board, and through Mr. Meudeuhall presented the Fire Company with a beautiful banner, the work of their own hands. The pres ent was entirely unexpected, but the un daautcd and irrepressible Foiemau of tho '"Otiesters," Jo. Webber, received the banner in behalf of the Company in his usual felicitous and inimitable style, as suring the ladies that should we be so unfortunate as to be visited by a ?nnilar calamity that befel the city of Eugene not long siuec, that woineu and children would be saved or firemeu would perish .with them. At half past seven A. M. the steamer started on her way up the 'Willamette, leaving quite a uuuibcr who had made preparations to go, but unfor tuuately were behiud time iu - putting in an appearance." About ten o'clock tho steamer reached and passed Corvaiiis, then gracefully rouuded-to and Ian led at her wharf. A proce.-sion was then form ed headed by the Albany Brass Jand, followed by the guests from Albany, and the rear brought up by the Fire Compa ny, which marched up the principal street , of Corvaiiis to the City Hotel, where the guests of the Company were left, the Fire Company then parading through the prin .ipal portions ot the city, the Albany Drass Band accompanying the while and Glliug the air with sweetest melody. On the return of the Company to the hotel, they were received by Hon. T. A. Chcnovvcth, Acting Mayor of Cor callis. who. iu a neat speech, tcnJerei t!e hospitalities of the city to Alla:iy Fire Company and those accompanying i the excursion, informing theni that a free dinner had been ordered for thsni by the City Council at tiu City II-tel. Here was aaother surprise, unexpected as gen crom.: Forcmaa Webber accepted the hospitalities so graciously offered, in a few well-timed remarks. J udge Powell heing louldly called for, briefly responcd to the call, thanking tho citizens of our sister city for this unexpected mark of their good feeling and neighborly kind ncss, assuring them that the citizens of Albany will ever remember with grateful hearts the courtesies extended by then; on this occasion. Then came tho dinner, and we believe we express the general ieeiiag of ull who partook of that dinner,. wheu rei pronounce ifc superb that in 3Iaj..G . W. Johnson the citizen of Cor vallis possess a prince among landlords, a brick" in his own right. At two o'clrck P. M. the steaaier, freighted with happy And joyou hearts, "cast off,'' and amid .the cheera of those on shore , answered back by the excursionists, tho waiving- of handkerchief-", music and general jolarity, nhot out from the -wharf and "made" for Albany, which was readied in about one ", Thus passed one of tho mo3t pleasant days we have ever enjoyed oil the Pacific oast, a day thai will long be remembered bj the participants aa a day of unaloycd pleasure and enjoyment. Webber Foreman of Albany Fire Company No. 1, oa last Wednesday : ' Portland, March 31, 1869. J Webbeu: Could not get the Fire Engine on board the steamship Conti nental. It will come on the Oi-'jlar.ime. J. L. COWAN. As the Oritlammo sailed from San Francisco for Portland yesterday or to day, we may look for the arrival of our fire engine in this city about the 17th inst. It is understood that the largest and best "niaeh-ne" for sale was obtained by Mr. Cowan. As the new engine house will, with a little extra exertion, be ready far occupaucy by that time, the fire Loys prrro-:e to have a littlo "time" over tho reception of the engine. Tho transfer of "der machine" by the City Council to the Fire Company and tfie ' housing" of the same by the" Company, will transpire as soon after its reception here as tho necessary ariangcments can bo made. Later. From Mr., J. L Cowan, who returned on Friday morning last from San Francisco, we have tho follow ing information concerning the fire en gine. Mr. Cowan purchased a fire en gine which had been in use by the Brod cric Fire Co. of Sau Francisco about four months, aud is in all respects as good as new, for tho sum of 1 ,000. He pur chased a hose-carriage for $150, aud 400 feet of new hose at SI 40 per foot. The total cost of tin wh!e rr.U be, in cluding freiiu, abudt yl,SJJ. Tho engine will be shipped on tho ocean steamer Or'jhim:in;, aud will probably reach Portland as early as next Saturday, and we may expect its arrival hero oa Thursday or Friday of the following week. Tho Fire Company have in con templation a grand procjssion, reception of the "machine," ''housing," etc., about the 1st of May. Look out for "der ma-shcen." This is ouo of the pret tiest, neatest and most orderly little cities on the coast of Oregon. This is our opinion, built on Tuesday's observation. Judging from the kind reception and the many courtesies extended to the citizens of Albany by the citizens of Corvaiiis, on the occasion of the excursion oa Tuesday last, we are inclined to the opiniou that warmer-hearted or more generous people don't grow up and come to full maturity and perambulate through space "to any greater extent than are to be found in our sister city, Corvaiiis. No; wonder that the citizens ci Corvaiiis are proud of their little city ; it's a homo to be proud of. f Next to Albany give us Corvaiiis.: ; ' Splendid.
