STATE AGRICULTU11AL SOCIETY.
The following business, transacted by
ihe Board of Managers of the State Ag
ricultural Society, in January last, is fur
nished! the Portland Oreyonian, by Hon.

This body met at Salem on the 27th
and deliberated until the evening of tltc
20 th, and adjourned after having passed
upon many matters deemed necessary to
the future welfare of the Society, and
some of which are calculated to intiaence
interests which are not confined to the
Society or its members.
The; members of the Board present at

Lewis,! J II. Douthit, A. J. Dufur and
G. J. Basket.
Other members of the Society, several
of whom were present by invitation,, took
part and assisted in the proceedings,
which were had in the following order

Officers were called upon for reports,
to which call J. II. Moores, Treasurer,
and Ei M. Watte, Recording Secretary,
made their reports, which were received
and adopted. The Corresponding Sec
retary,' 0. N. Terry, submitted no re

The! Board then proceeded to fix the
time for holding the oeit annual f;rir;
and Monday, Sept. 20th, was agreed up
on for! the day of couimeucemeut ro
hold six days.
A. J. Dufur, Rev. O. Dickinson, and
J. Q. Thornton were appoiutfd a Com
mittec to examine the statistics collected
by a Committee that the former meeting
of the Board had appointed. These gen
tlemen: giving a very - favorable report,
and advising a continuance of collecting
more and the publishing of the same for
distribution both in our State and through
the Atlantic and Western States, the pub
lication of 5,000 copies was resolved
upon.

Clark were elected.

Committees were appointed to revise
the premium lists, ma iy of which were
increased and some new premiums added.
The most noteworthy perhaps, are in
class 10, devoted to millinery, knitting,
sewing, etc., a silver cup valued at 310
is offered to each lady who shall succeed
in taking six or more first premiums.
A. L. Stinson, D. C. Ireland and J.
Q. Thornton, were appointed a Commit
tee to prepare a letter asking the influ
ence of our Senators and Representatives
in Congress in order to procure an ap
propriation of an amount sufficient to
cover the expense of surveying the lauds
lying 6u the Crooked river, east of the
Cascades, and on the Nehalem aud other
streams in Clatsop couuty.
The work of the Committee was adopt
ed and the letter forwarded by the Cor
responding Secretary. This section wus
taken in order to facili'ate the location of
lands jdonated to ths State for the en
dowment of an Agricultural Cullcge in
one body as near as may be.
David Froman was elected Chief Mar
shal on the Fair grounds, for the next,
fair, and Richard Duval Chief Marshal
inside the Pavilion.

the proposition of A. L. Stinson for the
publication of a paper devoted to the ag
ricultural interests of tho State.
The Executive Committee was instruct
ed to take measures to procure an abund
ant supply of water at the fair grounds,
and if j deemed practicable, to do so by
procuring the boring of an artesian well.
A resolution, recommending the pa
per to be published for the purpose of
rostering tne laoor interests oi tne estate
and adjoining Territories to the patron
age'of.thepublic was adopted. , .

i Resolved, That this Board, in behalf
ot the Oregon btate Agricultural Society,
denounce as a caricature the description
of Oregon on page 364 of the Monthly
Report of the Department of Agriculture
for Ottjber, 1868.
' We hold it to be untrue that ice has
formed one-half inch thick on the 7th
and 9th of May, 18G8, in the Willamette
Valley. - We also deny the truth of the
same statement as applies to the 7th and
9th of September ; also the statement
in regard to the fruit crop, and hold that,
t"-at referr'.ng to the darkness occasioned
by the smoke is such as truth will not
warrant.
The foregoing is an outline of the
most important matters considered by
the Board. It may be worth while to
take a second look at some of these ac
tions, and the motives of them. Five
thousand copies of sfati.-tical and other in
formation for distribution amongst the
emigrating population of the Atlantic
side. Fifty thousand cc'ies would be a
good investment of money, and might
have been doue at this time if our model
legislature would have aided the Society
to the amount of 1,000, but that was re
fused. The action relating to a survey
of public lands properly belongs to the
Legislature, but as that body has done
its best to insult Congress and our Sena
tors, the Soe:efy evidently stands the
best chance of success. The artesian
well project is adopted with a view to
settle the question of practicability of
getting water by that means iu this val
