Quinine.
Who tltat has over experienced the
delicious sensations of "fever-an-a-er,"
down in Mllenoj,'.' that has not thor
oughly tested the virtues of this powerful
febrifuge ? Its preciouscess was never
better illustrated, probably, than duri!
the late rebellion, when bold blockade
runners risked so much to carry supplies
of it to the camps of the suffering Con
federates. Quinine is the active principle
cf the bark of certain species of trees
which giow on the slopes of the Andes
and Cordilleras, llcgarding its origin
a febrifuge, various stories are told." One
tradition has it, that some Indians, who
were suffering from intermittent fever.
drank water from a pond in which bark
and twigs from trees of the kind referred
to, were immersed. They found relief
from the decoction, and introduced it
into their primitive pharmacology. So
long ago as 1S3S, an Indian medicine
man treated for fover, with this specific,
the wife of tho Viceroy of Peru, aud
cured her. Ifs fame then spread over
to Europe, and it soon became an article
of commerce. A subtle manner of pro
paring it is said to have been imparted to
Louis XIV., by an Englishman named
Talbot, and the secret is supposed to re
main undiscovered by medical men to the
present day. The almost superstitious
esteem in which quinine is held by suf
ferers from ague, can best be realized by
those who have visited the malarious dis
tricts of wooded swamp, in which so
many hardy lumbermen prematurely suc
cumb to the febrile destroyer.
A Valuable Table. The following
table has been published often, but it is
always in order:
A box 24 inches by 1C inches square,
and 23 inches deep, will contain a barrel.
A box 20 by 15 and a half inches
square, aud 8 inches deep will contain a
bushel.
A box 12 inches b' 113 incites square,
and 0 inches deep, will contain a half
bushel.
A box S by 8 inches square, aud 8
inches deep will contain a peek.
A box 8 by 8 iucbes square aud 4i
inches deep, will contain one gallon.
A box 7 by 8 inches square, and 4
inches deep, will contain a half gallon.
A box -1 by 4 inches square, and 4 J
iuches deep, will contain a quart.

By a certified copy before me of the ac
count current of his expenditures, made
by the General himself, including eight
years from 1775 to 1783, both inclusive,
it appears that he received to meet his
