TUCKER'S CELEBRATED
before four o'clock, the fine frame hotel
building, known as the Pacific, on the
corner of Second aud Washington, owned
by J. IS. Spreuger, Esq., was discovered
to be on fire, aud in a very brief time
thereafter- was a heap of smoldo;ing
ruins. This is the second time within
two years that Mr. Sprcnger has suiYered
loss of a Iwtel by fire on the same spot of
grouud. Owing to the extraordinary ex
ertions of the members of our new Fire
Conipany-r-who have not, as yet, been
furnished with the necessary apparatus
to extinguish conflagrations, aud the
help of many citizens, a largo portion of
the furniture, beds and bedding, was
6aved, and many ot the doors and window
sash were secured and removed to a place
of safety. We must do our boys the
justice to say that we never saw men go
int3 the business of having property
with more zeal and persevering industry,
than was exhibited by them on Thursday
morning. They went at the work with
the coolness and deliberation of old fire
idcd, without noise or coufusion, and
continued to work as loner as there was
debt.

from the devoted building.
Considerable alarm was manifested by
persons living in close proximity to the
Pacific for the safety of their dwellings,
but as the wind was not very hu;h, and
blankets were hung on the exposed por
tions of the buildings and kept wet with
water, little or no damage was done out

Pacific and its outbuildings.
The hotel and buildings attached cost
something over 17,000. we are inform
ed, and this, together with the destruc
tion of furniture, etc., will bring the total
loss up to sous 818,000 or 20,000.
There was aa insurance on the building
of 810,000.
The fire first made its appearance iu
the floor and the petition between the
reading and dining rooms, about the
centre of the building, from whence the
flames spread rapidly all over the build
ing. It is asserted by several who reached
the scene of the conflagration in its ear
liest stage, that an efficiently orgauized
"bucket company" could have concpuered
the flames in a few minutes, had they
been on the ground. We are satisfied
that had our boys been in possession of
the engine they have been- asking the
City Council for ever : since the com
mencement of the new year, the Pacific
Hotel and contents would have been
saved, with but a very small loss.
Whose fault is it, then, that the build
ing was not saved, and that an enterpris
ing, hard-working citizen, who has 'in
vested all his means in erecting a hotel
that was an ornament to our city, and
the best and completest hotel building in
the State, i3 to-day comparatively a beg
gar ?
. Had the wind been from the opposite
quarter Marshall's stable would have
caught, and the flame3 would have been
communicated to the stores on Front
street, and the entire destruction of the
business portion of our city would have
been accomplished on Thursday morning.
The destruction of the Pacific will be
seriously felt by the traveling community
it is a loss that our city could illy af
ford, and we fear that it will be long
ere its place will be supplied.
The general opinion seems to prevail
that the fire was the work of some das
tardly incendiary. We would - suggest
that an ample reward be offered by the
city authorities to be increased, if nec
essary, by a purse raised among our
citizens, for the apprehension and con
viction of the party or parties guilty of
such damnable wickedness. Hanging is
entirely too good for such villains.

Railroad Matters. Xews comes
from Salem that the East Side Company
offurs to connect onto Albany, provided
the citizens will take stock iu the road to
the amount of 830,000. The Albany
town proprietors, Messrs. Walter and
Thomas MonUith, have agreed to take
$10,000 worth of the stock, leaving $20,
000 to be raised by citizens, which, we
arc assured, has or will be taken imme
diately. Hurrah for the cars. We
haveu't learned whether Mr. Abe Hack
Ionian has taken stock in the railroad,
but suppose if ho has not he will.
Explained. The reason given us by
members of the city council why our
new fire company have not been furnished
with an engine long since, is in the fact
that several of our most influential and
heaviest property holders have strenu
ously opposed the measure from the be
giviug. After the disaster of Thurs
day morning, we venture the assertion
that there is not a man to be found in
the city who thinks we can do without
an engine, and who is not willing to be
tascd to aid in its purchase.
Accidkntally Shot. A lad named
George Elliott, tho son of 31 r. J. M. El
liott, late a resident of this count-, at
present a rcsldeut of Mendocino county,
California, accidentally shot himself with i
a pistol, in that county, on the Sth inst.
The little sufferer, aged nine years, died
ia thiny Inurs after the accident.

Medicines. The "Old Soldier," Dr.
Murray, of Portland, called on us on
Saturday last, and presented us with

the Oregon Central Railroad Companies,
with the reasons showing the Portland
(or West Side Company) to be entitled

we loam that James Rcdpath, of the
firm of Harris & Co., of this city, is not
expected to live. He has been sick for
some days with typhoid fever. His wife

Woods and ltogers, old residents of Al
bany, (both first-class mechanics,) leave
us soon, intending to pitch their tents at
