Flax Seed. Some of our farmers
are turning their attention to the cultiva
tion of flax. At the . present price of
wheat one bushel of flax seed is equal to
more than three of wheat then the straw
is worth. 40 per ton. If an acre of
gTonad will jiroduee one-third as much
Sax as wheat, it Is aTgued, taking one
year with another, flax is the most profit
able crop. Gentlemen who experiment
ed on a small scale last season intend
trying it on a larger scale the coming
season, as they assure us there is more
money in it than in wheat. Messrs.
Beach & Monteith, of the Steam" Flour
ing Mills in this city, offer inducements
to farmers who wih to engage in the cul
tivation of flax, that should not be over
looked by them. They have procured
the best variety of seed, which can be ob
t lined of them by any responsible party.
They will also contract for the flax crop
of the coming season in this county.

Wants to go Home. A story is told
(we don't vouch for its truthfulness), on
Thompson and Rogers, two married men,
who, wandering home late one night
stopped at what Thompson supposed was
his residence, but which his companion
iasisted was his own house. Thompson
i rang the bell lustily, when a window was
opened, and a lady inquired what was
wanted. "Mrdam," inquired Mr. T.,
isn't this Mr. T Thompson's house!"
"No," replied the ladyj "this is the res
idence of 3Ir. Rogers." "Well," ex
claimed Thompson, "Mrs. T T Thomp
son beg yonr pardon Mrs. Roger?,
won't you just step down to the door and
pick out Rogers, for Thompson wants to
go home."

Taxenjine's BUT. -St. Valentine's
day occurs this year on the 14th of the
present month. It is a very old notion
that on this day birds begin to couple.
"When the day arrives it will be in order
do send letters full of professions of love
And affection to the "broken-hearted
milkman" or " the "gal pext door."
"Tfcese little billetdonx are often the
cause of great jars in society," says an old
chronicler, by which ho probably meant
'family jarsr,; Of our.se every one
will take advantage of the day as best
suits them.
Church Seryicje. Rev. Mr. Jenkins
will hold divine service at the M. K
Church in'thii city on to-morrow, (Sab
bath) morning and evening. '
'i d i'ilpV I 1 "F- '"WoitKi.NO .Man." !v rcu-r-
V tj ellVf, lo tje cuncil prm-ei-tHni it will
bi seen 'that Mr. J. y. llacku-mun w is
the .'.'working nau" and chairman of the
"Pest House Committee," and not Mr.
Mealey, as was last week claimed by the
Register. Democrat. .
Every word asserted by the Registu
was in accordance with the facts. Mr.
Mealey was the working man on the
committee. At the suggestion of Mr.
Comley, who said that he was very busy
and had not time to give attention to
it, but gave his assurance that he would
ratify any steps taken toward securing
the property, Mr. Mealey spent the best
portion of four days in tracing up the
title and seduring a deed to the city for
the property in question. In the Coun
cil Mr. Ilacklcman, when called on for
a report as Chairman of the committee,
knew nothing of any transaction, as he
said, looking toward the purchase of the
property, but referred the Council to Mr.
Mealey for a report of what had been
done and M. Mealey made tho re
port. Mr. Mealey deserves credit
for the manner in which he executed the
duty imposed upon him by the Council.
The time spent in attending to the affair
was a loss, pecuniarily, to him, and uoth
ingbut a contemptible spirit of meanness
and a reckless disregard of every princi
ple of honesty and justice would induce
an attempt to detract from the ' merit
such services deserve at the hands of our
citizens.

pany, will be the grandest affair in the
ine of balls that ever came off in this
ity. The boys are very enthusiastic,
and every member of the company will
exert himself to make the affair pleasant
and agreeable to all who miy attend.
The hall will be tastily and elegantly
decorated with pictures, mottoes, evcr-
rcen?, etc., aul when brilliantly lighted
up, will present a most attractive appearance.
Arm and Leo Broken. Mr. McGill,
who will be remembered as formerly in
the employ of Messrs. Pierce & -Davis
as ferryman at this city, at present living
with Mr. Ilentzlcr, at Lower Soda on
the Cascade wagon road, about two weeks
since, while endeavoring to kindle a fire,
broke his right arm. Mr. Ilentzlcr un
dertook to "set" the arm, and in so doiug,
broke McGills left thigh. This is the
most siugular occurrence ot a aouoie
breakage that we have heard of for a
.... . r HT-iMI
coou s age. At last accounts ;ur. iucuhi
was convalescing.
Black Eye, Mr. M. V. Brown
Esq., of the Democrat, had a "head put
on him" last Tuesday, that doesn't add
very extensively to his personal attrac
tions. Mait. had been out hunting,
aqd espying a piue squirrel, he jumped
upon a stump to get a shot at the "ane-
mile." He "shot his gun off" at the
squirrel, and his gun in turn, beinj
over-loaded, kicked him off the stump
into the water, where he was found and
rescued by a couple of his friends, with
a badly bruised face and his right eye
in mourning. Mart, says it was a pretty
loud "call," and this thing called "fun"
in hunting ain't much to speak of, but
he give that squirrel a h of a scare
you bet your boots !
Bids for City Work. The Council
authorizes the Recorder to advertise for
bids to build crosswalks, etc., for the
city. This, judging from "precedents,"
is entirely unnecessary another piece
of extravagance. Just find which "bed-
rocker" will do it for the most "kale
seed," and give him the job, and not try
to cover up your proceedings under color
of law. Stick to "precedent," and you'll
come out of one end or the other of the
horu.
Willamette Farmer. C. P. Burk-
hart, Eq., agent for Willamette Farmer
in Linn county, requests all those with
whom he has left subscription papers and
who have obtained signers to the. 'same,'
to forward all such lists to him at 'Alba
ny by the first of March. It is desira
ble that the Farmer should start with as
large a subscription list as possible, and
all who favor such publication should
begin with the first number. ;
Temperance Lecture. On Tucs
day evening Grand Worthy Chief Temp
lar, II. N. George, delivered a temper
ance lecture in the Congregationa
Church in this city. The lecture was
well received by the large audience in
attendance. 'Mr. George is on the "war
path," and is undoubtedly accomplishing
much good for the temperance cause-
He will be here again on next Tuesday
evening, and a temperance meeting wil
be held on that i evening at the same
place. A general invitation is extended
Sales at Auction. As will be seen
by reading' our new advertisements in
this issue, W. W. Parrish & Co. intend
offering their entire stock of dry goods
groceries and hardware at auction, oom
mencing the sales on Monday, February
22d. An opportunity will then be
offered to those who attend these sales to
get choice goods at bargains. Read their
advertisement and be on hand when the
bell rings."
Fire Meeting. At a meeting of
Albany Fire Company No. 1, on Tues
day night last, the style of shirt to be
worn by members was adopted, and mem
bent requested to procure them as soon
as convenient. A cap was also adopted
and several dozen will be ordered in time
for the parade on the 22d. The uniform
adopted is plain and will cost but a trjfle,
and if each member will procure his out
fit before the 22d, the Company will pre
sent a very neat appearance on "dress
parade" neat but not gaudy.
Apples. An old and esteemed friend
of ours, knowing our fondness for red ap
ples, brought us in a basket full of nice
fellows, Thursday last. We appreciate
his kindness and good will, and hope

NEW- ADVERTISEMENTS.
Going, to tay uis fine. Mart.
Brown has an awful "editorial bead" on
lira mi"ht be called a "full face black
lead," very appropriately. A lady met
Mart.,"" the other day, on his way to the
Court House. A few steps farther on
she met a friend, when she exclaimed :
"I met Mr. Brown just now, and from
the looks of his face I think he's been in
a fight, and was on his way to the Court
House to pay his fine !"

Our Mills. We take the following
reference to the flour iranufactured by
the mills of this city, from the market
report of the San Francisco Times of
Jan. 20th :
Since our last weekly reference dull
ness and iurther depression have been
the feature of the market. The large
supply of Oregon extras come iuto brisk
competition with city and country brands,
and sates ot Magnolia have been enected
as low as 84 75, and of Albany Steam
(both (JregorO at ?4 U0. These are not
inferior, but good grades of Family Ex
tra's, and claimed to be inferior to uo
brand on the market.
Flouring Mill. Mr. Smith, of the
Pottery Works at Beuna Arista, called on
us yesterday. lie reports the town in a
flourishing candition, but says they need
a flouring mill there badly.
Sal. The property of the Linn
County Woolen Mills will be offered at
auction, by Sheriff Irvine, on Monday,
Feb. 22d, at the Court House.

. Convalescing. We learn that Miss
.Clara Buniway, who has been very ill
for the past two weeks, owing to good
care and attention, 13 now out of danger,
and rapidly convalescing.
, - Sickness. We learned on Thursday
that for the past two weeks the citizens
of Brownsville have had an unusal visita
tion of the ills that life is heir to, five
deaths having occured within eight days.
I Dull Times. From all quarters
comes the cry of dull times. Albany is
no exception to the general rule. The
times here are a3 dull as they ever get to
be, and a good deal more so.
Personal. Our brother quill, Carter,
of the Corvallis Gazette, paid us a visit
on Tuesday. He was seemingly in good
spirits, and had some money with him.
