' ' . Flax Seed. Under this caption the Unionist has the following : There will no doubt be a large number of acres sown in flax the coming season, and it becomes interesting to determine what kind of seed to sow. The past year there were two varieties grown in , this valley the common American and the Bombay flax. Where fibre is desired at the expeuse of the seed, the American variety is con sidered by far the best, as the stalks grow much taller; but where seed is de sired, the Bombay variety is superior. The seed grains are about a third 5 larger than those of the ,common variety, and consequently the same bulk of seed will produce more oil. Crops may be har vested with greater ease and less shatter ing, as the horse rake can be used with out breaking the seed bolls. In clean ing, the seed being heavy is not ' wasted by being blown away.. It has an ad vantage in threshing- over the common variety,' as the straw is shorter.1 It is thought to be more productive than. the common - variety. Last summer, in one experiment; from 37 pounds of seed sown on 1 acres of land, a crop of 41 bushels of seed were harvested. Persons desir ing seed for sowing can procure it of the Pioneer Oil Company. Suicide. A man named Coombs com mitted' suieide by shooting himself through the head, on the 14th inst., with a ball from a Henry rifle, at Canemih. Cause ascribed temporary insanity. 5 " The Democrats of Fort Wayne; Indi ana, turned out to a man, aud joined in the Union celebration ever the ' success of Grant and Colfax.
