combats shortage with "another Bonneville**
Behind the scenes o f last winter's critical power shortage 11
private and municipal power companies and the Bonnevillo
Power Adm inistration developed a system o f cooperation which
produced enough "e x tra " power to equal another Bonneville
dam. Except fo r the work o f the Northwest Power Pool, the
electrical systems in the Northwest might have collapsed.
Here’s how it w o rks: The pool interconnects electric systems
in Oregon, Washington, Idaho. Utah, Montana and British
Columbia. In such a large region there are differences o f time
zone, weather, stream flows and other factors which produce
variations both in power demand and in the output o f generat­
ing plants, area to area. \n area that is "s h o rt" at one lim e
can draw upon the temporary "surplus" o f another area.
Later on, the situation may he completely reversed, and
power w ill flow hack the oiher way.
By joining resources and coordinating the operation o f
all generating plants in the Northwest, power pool engineers
are able to utilize up to bOO.IXXl kilonatt.i e f power that noukl
go to Kdstt it the rttenther u items „ere isolated! That's more
power than Bonneville dam produces!
The Northwest was short o f power last winter, and condi­
tions w ill continue critical for several sears to come. The
power pool is one o f the measures taken hv electrical systems
to meet the emergens\ while new dams and powerhouse are
being rushed to completion.
