G overnor M artin has ste p p e d into
th e P o rtlan d lum ber im passe in an
effort to end the intolerable situation
th a t has resu lted in crip p lin g t h e
economic life of th e n o rth w est. He
has called a neutral-co n tro lled vote
fo r th is afternoon am ong th e certified
w orkers of th e Inm an-Poulsen mill.
The governor should have th e su p ­
p ort of all citizens in terested in fa ir
play in an e ffo rt to re tu rn th o u san d s
of saw m ill and lum ber em ployes to
w ork. He should have such su p p o rt
as was given in a resolution passed by
Colum bia G range a t C orbett in w hich
th e g ran g e rs pledged th e ir fu ll co­
operation in th e governor's e ffo rts “ to
get men back to w ork in O reg o n .”
T here is little question but th a t the
av erage w orker w ants an o p p o rtu n ity
to earn a living and do honest w ork.
The present im passe w ith its s u ffe r­
ing and losses to th o u san d s dem and s
determ ined effo rt upon th e p a rt of
th e governor and o th e r officials for
im m ediate and resu ltfu l action.
The long su ffe rin g people of O re-
gon. innocent victim s of labor tv a r-
fa re in recen t j’ears, a re e n title d to
legislation from th e sta te leg islatu re
th a t will brin g a b o u t some d eg ree of
responsibility on th e p a rt of unions.
Economic loss a n d th e su ffe rin g of
thousands of fam ilies, w hose b re a d ­
w inners a re idle by reason of t h e
lum ber ju risd ic tio n a l w a rfa re , c le a r­
ly and forcibly show s th a t action
m ust be ta k e n in th e public in te rest
bv its duly elected rep re sen ta tiv e s.
This county am ong o th ers s h o u l d
elect persons to re p re se n t them who
will legislate in th e in te rest of all th e
people ra th e r th a n fo r any p a rtic u la r
group. Let us hope th e people keep
this in m ind next y ear.

boycotts, w hile those of th e w o rk ers
and th e ir fam ilies cease. If th e strike
or boycott is prolonged an d savings
are used up th e w o rk ers and th e ir

lic relief. If th e le a d e rs ’ pay w ere to
stop a t th e sam e tim e as does t h a t of
the ra n k and file, business s tra n g u la ­
tion m ight not last so long.

recen tly in P o rtla n d by th e county
assessor w hen he urged th a t provision
be m ade fo r p ay in g tax e s once a
m onth. T ax sta te m e n ts, he suggested,
should be m ade in th e form of an in­
voice fo r services re n d e re d . Such a
p lan w ould m ake it a g re a t d e a l
e a sie r fo r m any tax p a y e rs, p a rtic u la r­
ly w h ere th e p ro p e rty ow ner is on a
m onthly w age, and w ould doubtless
resu lt in less delinquency. B illing fo r
services re n d e re d , such as schools,
police protection, etc., w ould a l s o
