high school F rid ay afternoon. N eces­
sary ad d itio n al ex p en d itu res have
m ade it necessary to exceed th e six
p er cent lim itation law. U nder th e
term s of this law. any p ro p erty tax
levies exceeding the lim itation m ust
be refe rre d to a p o p u lar vote.
This increase in th e sum req u ired
fo r the su p p o rt of th e local g ra d e
schools is due to th e follow ing r e a ­
sons :
Two a d d itio n al tea c h e rs h ad to
be em ployed to h an d le th e in cre as­
ing num ber of pupils. T eachers, last
year, had too heavy a te a c h in g load
to do ju stice to th e children an d this
y e a r th e enrollm ent is even g re a te r.
H ealth and safety of th e school
children m ade it incum bent upon
th e b o ard to m ake extensive re p a irs
and rep lacem en ts to t h e h e a tin g
equipm ent, w hich was found fau lty .
Safety ap p lian ces w ere in stalled in
th e h e a tin g equipm ent.
Due to th e desire to keep costs
down as low’ as possible extensive
roof re p a irs w ere d elay ed as long
as possible. This y e a r th e b o a rd was
faced w ith th e absolute necessity of
m aking re p a irs now’ or be fac e d
w ith g re a te r b uilding m ain ten an ce
costs later.
W ith th e depression, sa la rie s of
tea c h e rs w ere red u c e d to rock bot­
tom , a n d it h as been necessary to
m ake increases a ll a lo n g th e line.
F a ilu re to pay w ages co m p a rab le
w’ith schools in like d istricts w ould
even tu ally resu lt in low ering t h e
s ta n d a rd s of th e fac u lty .
Textbook ou tlay h a d to be in­
creased by $500 o v er last y e a r. O th ­
e r increases p rovided fo r w iring of
David Hill school to provide decent
lig h tin g on days w h en it is req u ired ,
sew er p ro je c t costs an d new’ fu rn i­
ture, equ ip m en t a n d replacem ents.
All of th ese e x p e n d itu re s w ere
necessary fo r p ro p e r m aintenance
and keep in g o u r g ra d e schools up to
sta n d a rd . T here should be no ques­
tion ab o u t a fa v o ra b le vote w hen it
com es to p ro p e r su p p o rt of t h e
schools in w hich our ch ild ren are
educated.
V e te ra n s’ groups of th e city are
brew ing a real p a trio tic observance
h ere fo r th e ce le b ra tio n of A rm is­
tice day, one of th e g ra n d e st days
in th e history of th is nation fo r m il­
lions of A m erican m en and wom en.
A p a ra d e and p ro g ra m a re being
a rra n g e d by th e A m erican Legion
and V eterans of F oreign W ars, a
fo o tb all gam e betw een H ilhi and
T ig ard will be a fe a tu re of th e a f t­
ernoon and th e legionnaires are lay­
ing plans fo r a g a la evening c e le b ra ­
tion to recall th e “ d ays of 1918.”
T his is an occasion w hen th e people
of th e com m unity should join han d
in hand w ith th e W orld w ar v e te r­
ans.
St. H elens is en th u siastically go­
ing a fte r a sw im m ing pool fo r th e
ben efit of its youngsters, old a n d
young. A p p ro x im ately $10,000 has
been pledged and of th is sum $5000
has been paid in cash. Com m ittee
m em bers have found all pledges
contacted paid in fu ll and some have
upped th e p ay m en t over th e ir origi­
nal pledge. One larg e business con­
cern gave $2000. Most of th e cities
around us now have or a re on the
w ay to having sw im m in g p o o ls.
W hen will th e people of th is com ­
m unity be able to enjoy a pool? W e
hope th a t enough in te rest and spirit
can be stirre d up to m ake th is pos­
sible in a n o th e r year.

H o m e r M artin, w ho engineered th e
obnoxious sitdow n strikes i n t h e

C. C. Hockley, state director of
the PWA, has been named to head
the regional office in the consoli­
dated offices of Oregon, Washing­
ton and Idaho. Hockley has done a
fine job and his appointment was an
exceilent recognition of his services.

night. Yet th ree-fifth s of th e fatal accidents
occur d u rin g th e h o u rs of darkness.
As th e d en sity of traffic decreases, speeds
g en erally increase. O ne out o f every fo rty -
fiv e d ay -tim e in ju rie s re su lts in death, -is
com pared w ith one d e a th out of ev ery tw e n ­
ty -e ig h t in ju re d in n ig h t tra ffic accidents.
