the afternoon a t Lost C reek ahead
of the p arty at a safe distance a
storm su ddenly b u rst w ith terrific
fury. T he th u n d e r rolled and pealed
like all the big guns of the naval
fleet had let loose at once. T rees
groaned, popped and sh riek ed like
th e ea r-sp littin g sounds o f t h e
grinding of th e ice floes of th e
pillar regions T he p arty got out of
th e ir cars and w alked a q u a rte r of
a mile, and in th a t distance they
counted 27 large trees laid low
and ground to sp lin ters by the
lightning. It took a large crew of
men w ith axes and saw s one hour
to clear a path for th e stalled au to ­
mobiles, w hich w ere as m any as
H illsboro saw d u rin g the "H appy
Days" parade. H ailstones covered
th e ground, of a size usually in ­
tended only fo r publication.

d e n t W ednesday ev ening w hen she
dropped asleep at th e w heel as
she was approaching th e highw ay
junction at th e w est en d of B eav­
erton bound for hom e She w as
d riving a light d eliv ery tru c k and
in an u nguarded m om ent it bolted
across th e highw ay, snapped off
a telephone pole w hich fell over
th e top of the tru c k and w as
carried along a sh o rt distance b e ­
fore strik in g an oak tree. A traffic
officer attem pted to open th e door
of th e c ar b u t could not release
his hand ow ing to th e w ire contact.
M rs R igert. w earin g gloves, was
able to open th e door. T he fro n t
end of th e vehicle w as badly
dam aged, but Mrs. R igert escaped
unhurt. The broken light w ires
caused a grass fire as they stru ck
the ground.

he w ill not come back alone.
