th e case if h a n d le d on an u n o rg an iz ed
basis. Indiscrim in ate selling m ig h t a c t to
b rea k th e m a rk e t and cut pro d u ctio n be­
cause of poor re tu rn .
T h a t th ese co-operatives fo r th e sale
of a g ric u ltu ra l p roducts have been of
b e n e fit to th e consum er as w ell as th e

fu l in m a in ta in in g prices that assure th e fa rm e r a
fa ir p ro fit, and s till give the b u ye r his money's
w o rth . E q u a lly im p o rta n t, th e y have done fin e
w o rk in assuring the consumer a constant sup ply
o f high q u a lity products day in and day out.
In some fields, such as m ilk , th e co-ops have
w o rk e d w ith au thorities in establishing hig h sani­
ta ry standards, and in lessening th e danger of
disease This has been o f in estim a ble b e ne fit to
the public.

90 per cent o f a ll accidents. A n d i t is to th is elem ent
th a t safety w o rk th a t is to re a lly produce results,
m ust appeal. The trends most noticeable in last
year's d riv in g have been summed up b y the U. S.
News in a stu d y o f o ffic ia l state reports.
F avorable trends included: Advances in la w en­
forcem ent and engineering; a s lig h t d ro p in casual­
ties in p ro p o rtio n to m iles d riv e n ; a s lig h t drop in
the p ro p o rtio n of casualties ascribed to "careless
d riv in g ;” th e records o f some states w h ich ca rrie d
on consistent campaigns d u rin g th e year, and show­
ed accident decreases as a result.
U n fa vo ra b le factors include: A rise in the p ro ­
p o rtio n o f accidents caused b y speeding; an e ig h t
per cent increase over 1935 in the nu m b e r o f d r in k ­
in g d riv e rs in v o lv e d in fa ta l accidents; lit t le p ro ­
gress in tr a ffic la w developm ent.
T he d rin k in g fa c to r is te n d in g to become p ro ­
gressively serious. O ver seven per cent o f a ll d r iv ­
ers in v o lv e d in fa ta l accidents are un d e r the in ­
flue nce o f liq u o r, as are ab ou t 11 per cent o f a ll
pedestrians k ille d .
N a tu ra lly , the n ig h t hours are the m ost danger­
ous fo r car operation. O ver a fiv e -y e a r period en d ­
in g w ith 1935, au tom obile deaths at n ig h t increased
37 per cent, w h ile d a ytim e deaths dropped 12 per
cent. A n d speed is fa r and aw ay th e m a jo r cause
o f a ll accidents, p a rtic u la rly the m ore serious ones,
both n ig h t and day.
The astonishing sales o f new cars and the gen­
e ra lly boosted vo lu m e o f tra ffic , have paved the
w ay fo r m a kin g 1937 an exce ed ing ly bad accident
year. On the other hand, th e w o rk o f th e accident
pre ven tion groups w i ll be unprecedented both in
scope and aggressiveness. O n ly tim e can te ll w h ic h
o f these opposed forces w ill be the w in n e r.
