D eborah rose early, brushed h er
h a ir w ith sw ift nervous fingers,
b ath er in cool w ater, and w ent out
Into the thin fresh m orning su n ­
shine. She had not slept well. She
w alked quickly up the p ath b e­
tw een the garden and the orchard
She w ent on. but a few yards in­
side the stone wall that separated
th e orchard from th e forest, she
tu rn ed and raced back dow n th e
p ath as if she w ere pursued: for

She bent and plucked one of th e I
