Fire, w hich ap p aren tly started
from a n unknow n cause on the
back porch of an u p stairs room in
th e ap artm en t house on F ourth
avenue betw een Jackson and L in ­
coln streets Sunday afternoon at
3:45 o'clock, bu rn ed th e stru ctu re
to the ground. Loss w as estim ated
by J. H. G arrett, ow ner, at $3000.

T h e bu ild in g once w as a p art
of th e T u alatin hotel located in
th e space now occupied by Weil's
D epartm ent store \ n ew er p a rt of
th e old stru ctu re, th e build in g was
about 35 y ears old. G a rre tt p u r­
chased it from Jo h n Foote and
m oved it to th e lceation w hich it
had occupied since, w hen th e re ­
m ain d er of the build in g was torn
dow n to m ake w av for th e m odern
W eil building in 1919.

W hen th e fire w as first discov­
ered. the flam es had attain ed con­
sid erab le headw ay and before th e
fire d ep artm en t could reach the
scene, the back wall, back p art of
tile room and w oodshed w ere afire

an d sh o rtly a fte r th at a hot w ater
ta n k exploded w ith su fficien t force
to te a r aw ay any roof w hich r e ­
m ained.
T he force of th e explosion was
sufficient to th ro w a piece of iron
pipe, about a foot long, in to a
group of boys stan d in g n ear th e
E llingson residence.

th e shingles. T his fire was p u t out

son home ju s t n o rth of H ilisboro.
