The Red Plan
They w ere good people an d patriotic

a re like them in opposing th e teach in g
of m ilitary discipline and tactics in the
schools.
They h a te w a r and its horrors. And
they incorrectly divine th a t m ilitary tra in
ing in coliege is a cause of w ar. They in
fe r th a t it m akes the tra in e d boy have
a wish to go to w ar.
In all this they are m istaken. Thus, Dr.
Crane, fo r 14 y ears p resident of th e U ni

fo r the country and good fo r th e w o rld .”
“ My observation has b een." he said,

' think it w orks the o th er w ay and m akes
them b e tte r peace a d v o cates.”
This is testim ony from experience. And
it is th e testim ony of all executives in
h ig h er education. A nd it is th e testim ony
of young m en who have gone out of col

M ilitary tra in in g , a m ere incident in
the college life of young m en, infinitely
lessens th e need fo r a la rg e r stan d in g

nation's being a tta c k e d . A nd it saves th e
horrible sla u g h te r of soldiers u n tra in ed in
m ilitary tactics.
Tf th e re h ad been tra in e d m en and
w ar w eapons enough in E thiopia th a t

in stead of fre e men, and n e a r slaves in
stead of living in a dom inion of th e ir own
and u n d er th e dom ination of no foreign
ruler.
A nd clim axing it all, th e overthrow of
th e A m erican system of governm ent by
arm ed revolution is sought, proclaim ed
and planned. E arl B row der, se cre ta ry of
