Ornery
We don’t blame anyone for getting
plenty “ burned up’’ when some unthink
ing and nervy person steals flowers th a t
the owner has worked with for weeks
and perhaps months. It is good cause for
fighting words and action.
Mrs. E. A. G riffith has put in much
time and effort in the growing of beauti
ful flowers. She was particularly proud of
a row of tulips some 50 feet long and she
had been nursing them along so th at her
mother would enjoy them on her return
here from California. The tulips were of
a choice quality with rare colors and long
stems. Imagine her feelings when on Sat
urday morning she found th a t approxi
mately 100 blooms had been cut off. Cut
ting of the blooms makes it impossible to
determine the color and variety for next
y ear’s planting.
When people with the love of flowers
and nature’s handiwork go to the trouble
of improving and beautifying their lawns
and gardens it is nothing less than mean
and ornery of anyone to destroy their
work.
Hiram W. Scott
Hiram W. Scott, who died last week
at Cherry Grove, had been a resident of
W ashington county for nearly half a
century, had always taken an active inter
est in public affairs and was one of the
county’s most substantial citizens. He was
a man of vigorous personality and gained
the respect of all who came in close con
tact with him. His integrity and honesty
were unquestioned.
Of the type who conquered the west,
Mr. Scott went into the wilderness and
with his own hands constructed a home.
It has been correctly pointed out that his
life and work exemplified the fortitude
and character of the pioneer.
Clean-Up Week has been designated
by Mayor G arrett as May 18 to 23. Let’s
all do our bit to make Hillsboro a more
tidy place in which to live.
