the county cou rt at "C olu m bia ,"

1850, when Oregon was a te r r i­
to ry It states that the court had
located a q u a rte r section of land
fo r the county seat and ordered
th a t the tow n plot be surveyed and
named H illsb oro ugh ." I t also re ­
fers to purchasing from D avid H ill,
fo r w hom the town was named, a
double log-cabin, to be used as a
co u rt house and to be paid for
fro m the firs t proceeds o f a sale
of to w n lots o f the tow n plot of
the county seat, of W ashington coun­
ty. Am ong the men w ho bought
lots, a record of M arch 6, 1850.

to the old co u n ty seat o f Wash­
ington county, does not occur, so
far as is kno w n , In Oregon h is­
tories. The settlem ent, according to
historians, was called Colum bus,
also East T u a lita n , before 1849. In
1849 the Oregon Spectator m e n tio n ­
ed the county seat as H illsb oro ugh ,
which, according to the above re c­
ord. became the o ffic ia l name in
1850. although even as late as 1850
the post o ffice address o f the cou n­
ty seat was East T u a lita n Plains.

ords survey is to uncover neglected
