Should Live in Russia
Reports from the seventh World Con
gress of the Communist International at
Moscow furnish grounds for doubting the
wisdom of recognition of Soviet Russia.
William Z. Foster, former communist can
didate for president of United States, in
speaking before this congress advocated
increased activity among the unemployed
to take advantage of the present “crisis”
of capitalism and promote the growth of
communism.
They use Fascist opposition as an op
ening to spread their vicious propaganda.
For instance Foster said a “united front
is being formed among left wing elements
to oppose Fascism. They will work their
way into groups that naturally would op
pose the Fascist ideas of government and
take advantage of their working together
to spread the poison of communism. Gil
Green, head of the League of Communist
Youth in the U. S„ said anti-Fascist youth
in America numbered 1,000,000 and Young
Communists 8000.
American communist speakers at the
congress talked about fomenting a Pacific
coast dock s t r i k e o f “Unprecedented
scope" next fall. Every advantage is taken
of the opportunity to spread the seed of
discontent and stir up trouble, and much
of that which has occurred in this country-
can undoubtedly be attributed to reds.
It would be a splendid thing if some
of these proponents of communism in this
country, if native born, were given the
“opportunity” to live in the country of
their dreams— Russia. As for the aliens
stirring up this red activity they should
be speedily returned to the lands from
.which they came.
Living standards under the system in
existence in this country and under the
Stars and Stripes have increased over the
years and are far better than that existing
in any other country on the face of the
earth. What many consider necessities in
this country would be real luxuries in
most every other country.
Welcome, New Chancellor
Dr. Frederick Hunter, new chancellor
of higher education in Oregon, and his
family have arrived in Oregon from Den
ver. Dr. Hunter will take over his new
duties as successor to Dr. W. J. Kerr. The
best wishes of the people of the state are
with Dr. Hunter and it is hoped that he
will do much to bring peace and harmony
on the higher education front in Oregon
Institutional loyalty may be carried too
far by individuals and result in damage to
the state and the higher education sys
tem. All connected with the institutions in
any way should realize that first of all
they are citizens of Oregon and that the
greatest good to the greatest number will
Come about through complete harmony.
Withdraw Recognition
Attitude of the Russian government as
expressed in the answer to the protest of
the United States indicates little desire or
intention on the part of the Soviet to live
up to promises made President Roosevelt
at the time of recognition by this govern
ment. Subversive propaganda has been
carried on to a greater extent than ever
and the recent communist congress there,
with speakers telling of their plots to over
throw this government, was clearly con
trary to the agreement. The entire com
munist program is encouraged from the
seat of the Soviet government. The United
States should back up its protest with
withdrawal of Russian recognition.
