One of the finest projects th at could
be undertaken in this community to pro
vide work for unemployed and at the
sam e time do a service th at would be
thoroughly appreciated would b e t h e
cleaning up of the Hillsboro cem etery It
is a wonder th a t it has not been included
as an SERA project long before this.
As it stands today, with no provision
fo r perm anent upkeep, it is fa r from be
ing a credit to Hillsboro or W ashington
county. There are o t h e r c e m e te rie s
throughout the county th at m ight ' eO
well be included in such a work, b u t
among the first should be the local burial
ground.
Hillsboro's old cem etery contains the
rem ains of hundreds who helped in build
ing up this section from a wilderness.
Many pioneers who carved their names
here nearly one hundred years ago are
buried there, including several who had
much to do with early Oregon history and
the saving of this g reat Oregon country
for the United States governm ent.
Considerable effort has been put in
by different groups in the past in hopes
of providing some m eans of upkeep fo r
the local cem etery. A lthough h u n d red s'
are directly interested by reason of hav
ing kin buried there, little tangible re
sults came from the efforts.
M embers of the American Legion, who
in the great m ajority of cases had less
direct interest than any other group, p re
sented a proposition whereby the post
would take care of upkeep during the two
fastest growing m onths of the year if oth
er groups would take charge during other
months, but no response was forthcom ing.
W ill people of the community perm it
the cemetery to continue as a disgrace
w ith its wild grow th of weeds, grass and
brush, or will som ething be done about
it? Can any local citizen look with pride
on this hallowed ground in such a condi
tion and when hundreds of motorists from
all over the country' drive by there every
day?

A Great Journalist Dies
Journalism has lost one of its most be
loved outstanding personalities in t h e
d eath of Dr. W alter W illiams, president
of the University of Missouri and dean of
the first school of journalism in the coun

the field of journalism in this country and
abroad and was highly regarded as an
educator.
W alter W illiams wrote “The Jo u rn al
ist’s Creed,” lived it and “ m ade it an in
spiring reality to thousands of men and
women in his profession.” The creed,
which will serve as a guidepost for jour-
jialists throughout the years, is as follows:
