Lumber Effects All
Complete picture of the Northw est
lum ber industry, its competitive situation
throughout the world and its im portance
to the w elfare of the great northw est is
graphically given in a pam phlet issued by
the W est Coast Lum berm en’s association
and reprinted in the Oregon Voter.
It is inform ation that should be known
to all northw est citizens interested in the
w elfare and progress of an industry so
im portant in the lives of every man. wom
an and child in this section. Too little is
known about this g reat industry at our
doorsteps. Those connected with the m an
agem ent of this industry have been poor
publicists. Story of the industry has never
been carried to the public as it should be.
It is time th a t it should and the mill people
should see to it th a t this graphic story is
carried into every' “nick and corner" of
the northw est through the new spapers.
Space limits us to a f e w q u o ta tio n s .
‘•Table« and graphs picture how production fell
from ten billion to three billion feet from 1929 to
1932 how sales prices dropped from $20 63 per th o u
sand to $11.50 and the num ber of mills operating
dropped front 706 to $98. Used capacity dropped
from 72 per cent in 1929 to $05 per cent in 1935.
“Actual num ber of homes built in 1933 and
1934 in this country dropped to about 5 per cent
of th e num ber of family units which w ere con
structed each year in the period of 1925 to 1928
All construction, including commercial factories, pub
lic works, etc., decreased from $6.380.000.000 in 1926
to $1.255.000.000 in 1933
“In 1929 Southern Pine mills cut 11.6 billion
and West Coast plants 10.3 billion board feet. Be
tw een them was cut more than tw o-thirds of the
lum ber made and consumed in this country. South
ern pine operated on an average low wage of about
«0 cents per hour and the West Coast on about 40
cents The West Coast worked an eight-hour day;
Southern pine a ten-hour day. B ureau of Census
of the United States governm ent reported the av er
age m ill prices received in 1929 as Douglas fir
$20.05; Southern yellow pine $25 66. The Western
mills had to absorb much higher freight rates and
this is the reason Southern pine m anufacturers could
get more for their lum ber in competition.
“West Coast mills during January. February.
M arch and April were well ahead of the mills in
the Southern pine region In total orders taken. Then
in the first week of May came the West Coast strike.
B uyers of lum ber in the Mississippi Valley, in
the G reat Lakes states and on the A tlantic Coast,
w here the most of the people in this country live,
turn ed to the South for their lum ber supplies. South
ern pine mills sold approxim ately 350.000.000 feet
o f lum ber in April, and in May more than 600,000,-
000 feet. . . .
. in 1934 the West Coast lum ber industry
got 22 per cent of the national lum ber dollar and
paid 31 per cent of th e national lum ber wage; and
out of every lum ber dollar taken in by the West
Coast industry, almost 50 cents went out in wages
. While total lum ber exported from Wash
ington. Oregon and B ritish Columbia, decreased
flom 1928 to 1934 more than 400,000.000 board feet,
the exports from British Columbia in 1934 were
m ore than 400.000.000 feet greater than in 1928. As
a m atter of fact, British Columbia mills had the
best export year in their history in 1934. In the
anme year Oregon and Washington mills had one
o f their poorest export years.”

It is a thousand to one th at you are not alto-

HE DOES THINGS w hich you do not approve
HE REFUSES to do things w hich you think should

If you, yourself, w ere president—and it is ju st

But even a critic like yourself w ill have trouble

GETTING BETI'ER. Even the “oppressed rich ” are

County Court
W ith the historical background of Hills
boro and W ashington county and the prop
er display of the Tozier historical collec
tion here this old pioneer town could be
m ade a shrine for all interested in the early
history of this country. If the Toziers were
to be given charge of such work here they
would do a mighty fine job of it as they
did fo r years at Cham poeg until ousted
by politicians. Their most interesting collec
tion gathered over many years and by
painstaking and devoted service to th eir
beloved state will m ake a valued addition
to the community. Both Mr. Tozier and
Mrs. Edith Tozier W eatherred are desir
ous of having the collection here and it
should be highly prized and cherished.
