Contest Improved
The queen contest for t h e “ Happy
P a y s” celebration this year was well con
ducted and was a w orthw hile change
from the old plan. Previously votes were
given with purchases at stores, or pur
chased outright, and criticism resulted.
However, under the new setup there is
lit ’e chance for “ kicks” and suspicions as
to unfair tactics. The geographical distri
bution of this year could not be improved
upon and the interest was generally coun
tywide.
C ham ber of commerce m anagem ent
m erits congratulation on this contest.
Kcal Competition
Competition instead of being a thing
of the past would now under NR A he
real competition. This significant state
ment was m ade before a national m eet
ing of editors recently by Frank Grimes,
president o f the Independent Grocers'
Alliance of America.
Competition in quality a n d service
would be taken into consideration more
now that price is not to bo considered
the whole thing. This is the real basis for
com petition and the one assuring the
consumer the fair deal.
He appropriately pointed out that the
low price argum ent for the consumer's
sake is not alw ays a good one. because
if it is a good one. w heat at 8c a bushel
should bring prosperity and of course it
brings the opposite of p ro sp erity ; that
a city housewife buying potatoes at a
few cents a bushel would not rejoice much
at her bargain if she knew the amount ot
farm ers’ blood upon them .
Address of R. F rank Peters at the
F ourth of July patriotic exercises carried
a mighty fine message of citizenship. Mr.
Peters has a splendid conception of citi
zenship and he expressed it a convincing
way. He recognizes th a t one cannot stay
in a groove and th at governm ent is by,
of and for the people.
Two m aior parties assailed by Borah—
headline. The senator from Idaho could
of course right all our wrongs. B orah’s
colleague, Senator Pope, fittingly said in
comm enting on the attack, “ Mere criti
cism can never take the place of a con
structive program to meet the practical
needs of our people.”
Three out of every five votes in the
Literary Digest poll favor the “New D eal”
policies on the whole. Oregon is outstand
ing in its support of the adm inistration
plans for providing a more abundant liv
ing for all. The only group of profession
al people in Oregon th a t gave a m ajority
against were lawyers.
No better public servant could have
been secured by the Hillsboro union high
school district than Finis L. Brown of
Laurel, who was re-elected to the board.
Finis has a true community spirit and a
desire to serve his fellowm en conscien

D arrow 's report as effecting the lum
ber code in his attack on NRA and charg
ing th at the small man was injured seems
verv much out of place. The lie is put
to th a t by the opening of a num ber of
small sawmills right in this county. Hills
boro's sawmill, which had been closed
down for several years, opened with the
adoption of the lum ber code. Lots of other
cases can also be cited. A dditional men
have been put to work and wages in
creased in an industry th a t was sorely
tried.
