'Arretted In Belgium
Counsel for Mr. Ford asked Mr.
Piittersou If It was not true that ha

days of the world war for the purpose
of writing Hie German side of the
controversy. Mr. Patterson denied
this and counsel then Introduced a
copy of The Tribune In which the an
nouncement was made that Mr Pat
terson was being seat to Germany to
ft ft the Oermun point of view. The
wltnesa admitted having been arrest
ed In I)elt;ium, on leaving Germany,
on a charge tht he ha.d written pro
Orman articles.
"In The Tribune you opposed and
denounced wur with Germany, didn't
you?" asked Ford counsel.
"We did not oppose war, we dl
oourged.lt," answered Mr. Patterson.
"We had been at close quarters and
we knew what an awful thing It was."
"But you advocated war with Mex
ico." "Wo advocated Intervention."
"We.ll. doeau't Intervention mean
war?"
"Uaually."

"You advocated the taking of Mex
ico too, didn't you?" The witness was
Inclined to deny this until shown a
copy of The Tribune In which the

Mr. Raymond, when asked by coun
sel on crosB-examlnatlon why The
Tribune excoriated Theodore Roose
velt because of hie utterances fol
lowing the sinking of the Lusltania,
aaid he befleved svoh talk was not
helpful to the government In reaching
a decision, and that calmness wa
desirable.
"Dld you ever argue for cajmnesi
when a border dilTtculty arose?"
asked Fori counsel.
"I think not." ftuawered the witness.
"You used some pretty violent lan
guage yourself, didn't you?"
"I believe we did."
Upon direct examination Mr. Ray
mond denied knowledge of tho Inters
national Harvester Co., and Standard
Oil Co., stocks held by relatives of the)
editors and publishers of The Tribune;
and also denied Interference with hlft
editorial utterances.
Mr. Patterson likewise denied that
Standard Oil or the International Har
vester have had any effect on Th
Trlbune'a editorial policies.
Mr. Patterson admitted having once
been a member of the socialist party.
Ford counsel offered tn evidence Mr.
Patterson's book, "A Little Brother
of the Rich" In an effort to prove that
Mr. Patterson once held views similar
to those attributed to Henry Ford It
was not admitted.
Writer Too "Pro-British"
The witness admitted having dis
charged Frederick Wm. Weil, The
Tribune's London correspondent, be
fore the United States entered tho
war. Counsel for Ford asked if Weil
was told that his articles were too
pro-Ally.
"Too pro-British Is what I probably
said," returned the editor.
Col. Henry J. Rellly. commander of
tho famous artillery regiment from
Chlcsgo, known as "Reilly's Bucks"
took tho stand and testified as a mil
itary expert to the necessity for Inter
ventlen tn Mexico. A long deposition
was also rend from James W. Gerard,
former U. S. Ambassador to Germany,
placing tho blame tor Maxiema
trouble at Germany's door.
Joseph Galloway has ' sued
Pearl Galloway for divorce, the
grounds being cruel and inhuman
treatment. The husband swPars
that the wife scolded and nagged
lii in continually, and was dissat
isfied because his earning capac
ity was not better. He also s?ys
the wife told him she had no af
fection for him, and she finally
left him and wild to Portland to
reside. They were married ,at
Vancouver in 1915. The plaintiff
is a resident of this county.
