BUOWN Mr. and Mrs. Leonard C. brown, re siding northwest of Hillsboro, on the lA'i.syville road, received a telegram last week, from the War Dept., stat ing that their son, Lowell, who was w ith the A. L. r., was missing in ac tion, Sept. 29. This is doubtless an error, as the parents received a let ter from Iowell, dated Oct. 4, saying he had received a flesh wound on the left shoulder, near the base- of the neck, and another letter, dated Oct. 16, saying he was in base Hospital No. 85, and getting nlong so well that he was on hospital guard duty a portion of the time. CHAS. L. WALKED Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Walker, of So. Tualatin, have received a message announcing that it is officially re ported that their son, Charles L. Walker, of the A. E. F., was killed in action October 18, at the. front The news reaches the Argus just as we go to press, toung walker was one of tho earliest of the Hillsboro volun teers, Co. b Third Oregon. CLUB ELECTS The Hillsboro Club met Tuesday t veninjr and elected olliccrs and transacted other business. Presi dent Faster reported the club in the most thriving condition. The election was unanimous, and the old olliccrs will serve again President, R. R. Easter; Vice President, V. Y. Boseow ; Secre tary, J. K. Gilbv. A coinmiltec on Pacific Highway, to look after the Hillsboro end, and to confer with up-vallcy committees from various towns, and to act in uni son with the county legislative delegation was appointed C. B. Buchanan, O. B. Gates and J, E. Reeves. A committee was sent ov er to the county court to assure I hat body that Hillsboro would assist in helping the court pass road appropriations on the lateral leadinir south from Hillsboro to Scholls and Laurel. I.. T. AfePheeters, Dr. J. O. Robb nnd J. II. Garrett were named to look into the matter of road signs for Hillsboro, as they arc badly needed on the roads leading to the county scat. MEMORIAL SERVICE There will bo memorial services at the Evangelical Church, Sun day, at 2 p. in., held in honor of Miss Imah T.edford, who died in France. All arc invited to attend this last memorial in honor of the woman who gave her life for her country. Kinton & Schulmcrieh, of Banks, have sued L. C. Killin vs. the Wilson River k Gales Creek Railway, after nearly five days of right of.-way in circuit court came to an end abruptly Tuesday morning when Circuit Judge (ien. R. B.-iifhy entered volun tary non-suit. .Mrs. Killin sued for $(1150 for damages alleged to have been sustained by her hy reason of a fire, which spread from tin- railway right of way to her I'ju laiiils, burning over 7.2 acres. She alleged that the rail road company was negligent, and that the tires set to the debris spread and entered her lands ad joining, burning some of tin: bca verdain lo a depth of two and three ft i I. The lire took place Aug. H. IH, as quoted in the complaint. The Court held that the com plaint was based upon a trespass, v.hile the plaintiff admitted a si ttli ineiil on the ori'inal tres pass, which nullified the proceed ing. There is nothing to preclude plaintiff from bringing another action, however, as the ruling in no way debars further soil. The jury went n:t last Thurs- d ',y and viewed the prcini-,es and the ease was started in earnest on Friday. There was a brilliant array of legal talent interested in the soil, and the costs of the jury are fixed at over !f'2(K). The Plaintiff must pay the cosls and disbursements of the case, but whether or not the jury fee conies in as one of the legitimate charges is not indicated. The place in question. was for merly the Benton Killin proper ly, which went to his widow af ter his death. The defense, in three parts, had counsel as follows: For the railway company, Jesse Stearns, Portland ,'iiiil.Wm. G. Hare, Hills boro; for Porter t Conley, Sea brooke Dibble, Portland, and for the rieht of way men, Messrs. Davies, Patterson and Hankins, L. M Graham of the Grove.- MOTHER AND SON DIE Death visited the Frank C. Burk holzer home at Buxton, Sunday and Monday. Mrs. Biirghol.cr died Sunday evening about 9;:jo, from iiilluciiza, and the sou, Lou is, aged about .sixteen, tlied Mon day morning at 9:30. He was a sufferer from the same malady. The mother is survived by the husband , Frank C. Burghol.cr, a prominent rancher of that sec tion, and the following children Mrs. Bessie Crawford, ('has., in the l'. S. N'avy, and now en route home; Thomas, in Canada, ami Frank, ill at home. The funeral of the mother and son is set for Saturday of this week, in the hopes that Charles arrives home in tiinr for the obsequies. DICK KAMNA Richard Kamna, better known as Dick Kamna, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Bchrmann, at Cornelius, Sunday, Nov. 21, at 1 1 a. m., succumbing to an illness of several months, involving an operation. He was born in Gcr many, January 22, 1873, and since his arrival in the United States has lived in the South Tualatin and Blooming sections. He leaves to mourn bis loss the following brothers and sisters- Henry Kamna, Blooming; John Kamna, of Farmington ; Herman Kamna, of North Ilillsboro; Mrs. lichrmatin, ot I ornclius ; jurs. j J. The funeral took place Tues dav at the home of Mrs. Behr- niann, at one p. m., at v,ornenus , r i; MARGARET UFENNACHT Mrs. Margaret Rufennacht died nt the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. T Crocni, ucar Cedar Mill, Nov. 21 IS) 18. She was born in Canton Berne, Sw itzerland, in 1849. Her luisband died many years ago, at their home near ( edar Mill. Slit is survived bv an only daughter Mrs. Lydia Crocni, with whom she had made her home for a number of years. The funeral took place Sunday from the Crocni home, nnd ser vices were held at the Baptist Church, . Bethany, Rev. Win. Graf, Bethany, and Rev. John Kratt, Portland, conducting the obsequies.
