Their papers criticised Wilson when he sent troops to Vera Cruz, then criticised him because he would not interfere in Mexico, and now that he is after Villa they are praying that we shall have war with the country to the South of us. A Portland straw vote Rave Wilson more ballots than both Hughes and Koosevelt combined. Politicians of the HuRhes-Koose velt type ascribe the vote to th women, but as a matter of fact women largely vote as men do. With either Koosevelt or Hujrhes in the field it begins to look as though Wilson will have a big chance to succeed himself. In justice to a resident of Hillsboro it might well be said that Benton Bowman would be a safe man in the legislature. He is opposed to fly-by-night leiisla tion, against numerous commis sions, and will at all times vote along lines of economy. He is against all schemes of bond ing, and, taken all in all, would be a safe man. ' He was born and raised on a farm, and real izes just how much the social and civic organization depends on this element AN APOLOOY It is said the Banks Herald can didate for the legislature tells that he is taking pugilistic lessons in order to chastise the Argu? reporter. True, or not true, tht party of the second part hastens to apologize. History: Some months ago the Herald man at tempted to shake hands with the party of the second part. In the mixup which followed the Herald man alleged he was "brutally assaulted on the court house square,'' wherever that is. So, the apology: Sorry it hap pened; can't account for it; very sorry to think that such a thing could have happened; always shames one, anyway, when he assault a scrub, and it appears to have started an epidemi? of "assaults" aroundrBanks. Hav ing apologized it is hoped that a dozen of our friends around Banks, like guilty, will hasten to tender their apologies. SCHOOL NEWS Two school rallies were held last week, one at the Mountainside school house, below Scholls, and one at Gaston. These meetings were well attended, the patrons of the districts taking part. Pro fessor Kilpatrick, of the Univer sity of Oregon, gave a lecture at each rally. A REPLY It has been, and will be my pu pose, during this campaign, to appeal to the voters of Washing ton County in an honest and gen tlemanly way, and without mis representation or abuse. 1 do not know that the mat ters discussed in the published statement of District Attorney E. B. Tongue are of much im portance, however, I wish to as sert just as emphatically that he did make the positive statement to me that he was not, and would not be a candidate, and gave as his reason that he would not consider the office without a deputy. .'fhe discussion occurred at the Court House just before we ar gued the matter of the injunc tion against the Sunday closing law during the latter part of January, and at that time he had been without a deputy about three weeks. There was no opportunity for misunderstanding, was no misun derstanding and no necessity for further discussion as I had every reason to and did believe that he meant just what he said. He is now closing his second term, making eight years service as District Attorney. My dec laration was filed February 9. and my case, a3 all others, does not rest with any man, or partic ular set of men, but with the voters, who are the sole and su preme arbiters. H. T. Bagley.
