J. M. Btake. aged 46 years, own

night by hanging himself in his
barn. Blake had been despond
ent for two or three days. He
owed nothing, but was getting
no ready money, and he made
the remark. Saturday, that a
man who could not make things
go had better end bis life. Last
evening, after supper, he told his
wife that he thought he would
go across trie town to borrow
a a isc. sne volunteered to go
with him,nd when she did this
he gave up the trip, and started
to play with the children. Mrs.
Blake went to the post office.
and when she returned about 8
o'clock the husband was gone.
She naturally supposed be had
gone to borrow the diss, and
thought nothing about it until it
grew late. When he did not re
turn at 10 o'clock she went to the
barn and called, but received no
response. She later called on
several neighbors, and at mid
night went through the barn.
She also called on Geo Hunter,
who told her if h,e did not show
up in a few minutes he woald or
ganize a search party. About
one o clock she again went to
the barn and found the husband's
body, suspended from a rope.
Mrs. Blake, assisted by a relative
of her husband, cut the body
down, it being stilt warm. All
efforts to resuscitate the man
were futile.
Blake formerly worked for the
Portland Water Company, and
lately expressed a desire to re
turn there.
He was a native of Illinois.
Sheriff Reeves and Corner Bar
rett visited the scene, and con
cluded that there was no necessi

so apparent.
Blake was in Hillsboro last
week, and in talking with Davis
