A society in Portland is making
good in taking rare of men who
have families and who have been
under the stress of no employ
ment, ai d who do not wish to
become objects of charity. Eu
tene Brookings, or T Morgan
Building. Portland, was in Hills
bora, Monday, and made arrange
ments at the Hillsboro Mercan
tils for credit for a family located
in the county, on a farm, east of
town. Mr. Brookings says he
first finds some ranch where
man and family can locate and
get work enough to helo along
their living, and the society doe
the rest until the people get es
tablished. At odd times the
man can work cleaning up land.
put in a little garden for himself,
and find occasional employment
for the larger children. In time
the parties can get some chick
ens, cow, and soon become self
supporting.
There are in Washington Coun
ty many big ranches which have
an extra house where a family
like this could get a place
house tbem. and the head of the
family could clear up land at odd
times, thus developing the coun
try as well as making the affair
a mutual one tor profit Anyone
desiring to locate a family tn
need of help of this kind might
get in touch with J. W. Connell.
of the Mercantile, or write direct
to Eugene Brookings. 728 Mor
gan Building, Portland.
If all who could would avail
themselves of this plan to get
their wild land cleared, or their
places improved, there would be
no unemployed in Oregon.
