FARM ADVISERS
Forest Grove. Dec. 15. 1914.
To the Editor:
At the last session of the legis
lature a law was passed provid
ing for theaDDointmentof Coun

in the State which meets with
certain requirements. As the
name suggests, the dutiesxf this
officer are advisory. The idea is
to carry instruction concerning
improved methods of farm man

farm problems, to the individual
farmer. The work is conducted
under the supervision of the
State Agricultural College and
the expense is borne half by the
State and half by the County.
Several counties ot the State

law, and it is reported that re
quests have been sent in to the
College from this county, asking
for the appointment of an ad

TAX LEW FGLLO
Will be Some her Near 17 Mills.

LEVY UST YEAI WAS i WLLS
l'aicrtily satf Kama! Cmm Migfc to
Catuty Tai Pama TM Year
Figuring from every possible
basis it is more than likely that
the tax levy this year, covering
the general county, state, and
school taxation, blanketing all
taxation excepting special road,
school and city taxation, will go
somewhere near 17 mills on a
valuation of 22 millions of dol
lars, the estimate of the tax roll,
including the public service cor
porations like the railways, tele
graph and telephone systems.
This would create a tax. gen
eral, of $374,000 aside from the
special vote levies. As a natter
of fact this levy, if made, would
reduce taxation over last years
levy in the sum of $36,407.
The SUte Levy
The state has sent in the
amount of tax that Washington
County must pay in this year of
our Lord coming. 1915, and it
reaches the round aumber of
$89,535. of which the University
of Oregon, the Corvallis College
and the Monmouth Normal get
$18,707.20, and this must be paid
out of the funds of the county,
whether the entire tax is collect
ed or not Just think of li
nearly nineteen thousand dollars
for the outside school tax! Is it
any wonder that a bill will be in
troduced at the coming session
of the legislature to cut down the
amount which now must annaal
ly go to the support of these
three institutions?
The state must, under the
present millage law, give these
schools the magnificent sum of
$689,965.67. or nearly a dollar for
every man, woman, and child in
the state.
Half of that would be ample
or even less than nail, n tne
legislature shall fail to reduce
this gift then the next general
election will have a repeal meas
ure on the ballot and the people
themselves will have a shance to
veto the big school taxation.
Editor Argus: I replied to an
editorial in the Oregonian, which
appeared Dec. 8, criticizing the
county board of this county for
putting a ban on the auto trucks,
to preserve roads, ibe reply
must have found the waste bas
kets. The condition of the roads
after heavy auto truck travel
was sufficient answer to the de
sired explanation asked by the
daily paper. It has now beea a
month since theautos were taken
off the roads, but the damage
they did to our dirt roads
still visible. They not only made
ruts in the dirt roads, but they
plowed furrows, and they trs
now filled with water. They
even took fences down to get
rails to pry the auto trucks out,
and then left the rails in the
road. They would skid across
the road and recross the grades
to keep from going in the ditch.
and in some places the highways
are beyond repair until spring.
The railroads repair roads when
they do damage but the auto
truck drivers do not Again,
they will give no kind of a vehi
cle an inch of road they take it
all regardless how they frighten
teams. Even automobiles must
give way to the auto truck. I
have interviewed the Beaverton
merchants and they say they
should not be allowed on our
dirt roads, as one trip will do
more damage than ten wagons.
I do not think the railroads were
making any kick but the farm
ers were and who can blame
them. Now let us keep the auto
trucks off our dirt roaos whin
they are muddy. W. B. Em
