KILL THE UKAFT
As the Arvrus has heretofore
said, the state school -col kjr
graft should b killed otT, and at
once. Under the present law.
enacted by the last legislature.
Washington County alone must
pay an annual tax of over twen
ty thousand dollars for the up
keep of O. A. C and the Uni
versity or Oregon. It is too
much it is an outrage - it is rob
bery of the first water. On top
of the fact that the people kilted
the millage bill only the election
before the legislature met. that
same legislature, elected at the
same time, enacted the seven
tenths of a mill for the support
of the two colleges. With this
comes the increase of valuations.
and now we shall see the two
schools get a million dollar each
year. This means over a dollar
each for every man, woman and
child in the state. The law
should be repealed. W. G. Harm,
on the legislative ticket for this
county, says he will support a re
peal measure. Let every representative-candidate
make the
same pledge. Washington Court
ty can't stand burdens like this.
The "school-gang" and the Mult
nomah "rinjrster-jrang" stand to
gethereach helps the other -
and the taxpayer must pay. Let
Oregon do its full duty Ito thete
schools, but let the state rebel at
robbery, for that is all that the
present law means.

Weston wants a state Normal
The measure now on the ballot
and for which you will vote for
or against, asks for one-fortieth
of a mill. The Arsrus believes
that Eastern Oregon is entitled
to a Normal school. Geography
demands it. It believes the Nor
mals are a good thing for the up
lift of the public school system
The Argus insists that the
measure is reputable. The state
already has buildings, and Wes
ton asks for this small suDuort
Monmouth already has an estab
lished Normal. Let Weston have
one. Give the Weston Norma
support - but do not forget to see
to it that your representatives-
elect pledge themselves to repea
the enfarious university millage
bill. Then vou will have ac
complished something.
