According to the statement of
the Insurance auditor for Ore
gon, Washington County's finan
cial condition is all to the good.
The report shows that hut live
counties have more money on
hand and they are Columliia.
Multnomah, Umatilla, lillamook
and Marion. Klamath county
is in debt nearly a half million
dollars, and Jackson is a close
second.

John Milne, pioneer miller of
HiliKlxiro. died at hU home in
tliii city at midnight Sunday,
aft'-r an illness of several months,
during which time he continually
fail'-d. Mr. Milne was born in
Hani, shire. Scotland, May 24.
1Ho2, his parents beiw? natives
ii that country. He livedon the
home farm until he was seven
teen years old, and then went to
Klgin. where he Berved three
years as an apprentice-miller,
ill health forced him to leave the
husiness, and he then took an
apprenticeship in the New Mill
Iron Works at Murrayshire,
Scotland, where he completed his
trade, and was made superin
tendent of the plant, a position
he held for five years. In 1857
he emigrated to Ontario, locating
at Ingersoll. where for eight
years he worked at his trade.
In 1SG8 he went to New Zealand,
later going to Australia. Leav
ing Australia he went to Tasma
nia, where he milled for 18
months. Returning to America
he landed in San Francisco in
1ST'), and "that year settled in
Oregon. Realizing that this was
the natural home of the oat, and
that the Oregon product made a
line breakfast food he started a
plant in Hillsboro, combining it
w ith a flouring mill. His venture
was Huccessful from the start
and he was soon shipping car
goes all over the world. He
amassed a fortune, and, a few
years ago, closed his plant. He
bought largely of farm land3 on
the North Tualatin Plains, and
retired from active business,
caving the tarms in charge 01
his sons, later deeding them to
them. He and his daughter,
Klbotbeth, now Mrs. Willis Ire
land, made a trip around the
world a few years ago.
Mr. Milne was a man of the
strictest integrity, and he had
the confidence of the Portland
financial concerns to the extent
of any request, for they knew
(us honor well.
He w as married to Margaret
Linklater, in 1878. She passed
awav in January, 1901. Three
children were lorn to the union.
Mrs. Willis Ireland, with whom
he lived since retiring from busi
ness; John and Jacob, of North
Tualatin Plains,
The funeral took place Tues
dav atternoon irom tne iamiiy
home, Rev. Andrew Carrick con
ducting the services. Interment
was in the Scotch Plains Presby
terian church cemetery. De
ceased was a member and one of
the founders of this church.

again until June when the

vs McCarthy was settled after a
jury had been called and one side
of the case heard. Sarah J.

ferred to the United State3 court
this being a damage case against
corporation of Kentucky: Hird-

MRS. NVILHCLMINA SCHOEN
Mrs. Wilhelmina Schoen, widow
of the late Frederick Schoen,
died at the home ot her daughter,
Mrs. Chas. Schamburg, Tigard.
June 1. 1914. The funeral took
place yesterday, interment being
in the C ornelius cemetery. Mrs.
Schoen was born in Germany and
was married to Mr. Schoen in
that country. They came to
Cornelius about 38 years ago,
The husband died June 19, 1910,
Deceased was aged 9 years,
months and 17 days.
I he surviving children are
Fred Schoen, Cornelius; Mrs
Minnie Schamburg. Tigard, and
Mrs. Pertha Kalbath, of Berke
lev. Cal.
Mrs. Schoen had many friends
in the Cornelius community.
w here she lived so long, highly
respected.

Russell, the 2 year old little
son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Ling,
of this city, died suddenly at Sa
lem, yesterday, from an attack
of croup. The little one had
been in excellent health up to
the day ot its demise, barring
severe cold, and the parents are
heartbroken over the sad occur
rence. The funeral will take
place at Salem tomorrow.
The experiment of oil on the
streets is not displeasing from
the standpoint of less dust fly-
ing. anyway, even 11 11 couia
serve no other purpose. The
county will oil many stretches of
rock roads this Summer, and
from observation there is proof
that the macadam will wear
much longer. The machine used
is much better than that used in
other counties.
Mrs. L. Shinaberger and
daughter, Miss Myrtle, departed
this week for a two-months trip
to the East. They make their
first stop at Gooding, Idaho, and
from there visit at Chicago, Val-
paraiso, inn., nusuurg, ra.,
