Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Cornelius
visited with J. M. Brown and
wife, above Banks, this week.
Miss Mary Brown returned with
them, and will remain for a few
weeks' visit
H. Peterson, of near Farming
ton, was a city caller yesterday,
bringing up some charcoal, in
burning of which he is a past
master. With all his 73 years
Peterson walks as straight as
one of the pines back in Sweden.
Frank Atkins, working for
Leonard Tompkins, while load
ing cars at the S. P. depot Fri
day, badly injured one of his
, knees. Dr. Hyde attended the
injury, and placed the member
in a cast
Guy Bennett a carpenter on
the P. K. & N., working at Roy
severely split his foot this morn
ing, with an ax. He was brought
down in a caboose, and the in
jury attended by Dr. Erwin, the
road surgeon.
Contractor M. C. Hewitt has
another large barn to move down
in the Orenco country. He has
also submitted a bid for moving
the K. U. 1. M. hall from Green
ville to Banks.
Francis Linklater. while crank
ing an auto last Saturday, had
one of his arms fractured. Dr.
Leon Hyde attended the injury.
Ihe lad has lost no time at
school, but as it is his right arm
he is out of the writing exer
cises for a period.
Ed Kerr, the blacksmith, had
a $10 gold piece changed by
Postmaster Larrikin, the other
day, when that official discov
ered that it was of the mintage
of 1862 a date rarely seen on
gold pieces in this section. The
gold was from the California
mines, minted after the excite
ment of 1849.
J. E. Zimmerman, of beyond
North Plains, writes the Argus
that the rural route No. 1, out
of Scappoose, has been discon
tinued because of the bad road
in the Multnomah end of the
Btretch. John has been forced
to change his mail to a route out
of Hillsboro, all because of poor
roads in a county that always
boasts of its fine thoroughfares.
Mr. Frank, who was associ
ated with Verne Curry, in busi
ness at Orenco, will leave in a
iew days for Eastern Virginia,
for permanent residence. He
has been here for five years, and
likes the country, but says his
health demands that he get back
to the "Blue Ridge Mountains of
Virginia." J. B. Phillips, well
known here, will also trek back
to the Tennessee Virginia sec
tion before long.
Grover Combs will move his
furniture store this evening and
in the morning, and will open to
the public this Friday, in his
handsome new quarters in the
Shute building, remodeled this
month by Contractor Beatty.
Mr. Combs wishes to thank the
people of Hillsboro and vicinity
for their patronage, and assures
the public that he will be better
equipped than ever to supply the
wants of the community in the
furniture and housefurnishing
line. He now has the most hand
some quarters for a furniture es
tablishment to be found in the
county. You are invited to call

It might be news to many of
the friends of deceased to learn
that James Gray, for many.
many years the shoemaker at
Glencoe, is dead. Gray left here
and went to Ontario, Canad",
where he died several weeks ajro
from an attack of heart trouble.
Gray was a fine workman, and
for many years made boots and
shoes for scores in that section
of the county, as well as in Hills
boro. He was a fine old gentle
man, well read, courteous and
jovial. He disposed of all of his
property here before going bac

brought suit to cancel a contract
signed by them, providing for
the sale of timber on Section 26.
T. 1. S. K. 3 W., wherein they
were to receive $1.25 per M
They allege the original contract
was made with John Peterson
but that Peterson signed the
contract by writing R. H. Peter
son s name. K. H. Peterson
the plaintiffs allege, is a minor
son of John Peterson, and they
claim ihey have no contract with
the boy. They want the agree
ment annulled and set aside.
Lawrence McAlear, the 10
year old son of the foreman at
the Hillsboro Lumber Mill, fel
from a pair of stilts last Thurs
day evening, and broke the ulna
-the tip of his elbow. The frac
ture was of such a nature that
Dr. Smith sent the boy to
Portland specialist The young
er brother, who was also enjoy
ing himself on stilts, concluded
they were a menace and soon
had both pairs reduced to kind
ling.
The registration up to yester
day totalled 3380 republicans
1254 democrats; and 61 Progress
ives. Every precinct shows a
big republican registration over
democratic, as usual, excepting
two -Aloha and North Corne
lius. Aloha has 72 democrats
to 71 republicans, while North
(sornelius has 6b democrats to
57 republicans. The four Hills
boro precincts register 608 re
publicans and 139 democrats.

fibroid tumor at Dr. Smith's hos
pital, last week. She is getting

you are hereby required to appear and
answer the complaint filed against
you in me anove etitit ed Court and
cause on before Friday th ftth day
of June, 1914, and if you fall to so
appear and answer the i'laintiff for
want thereof will apply to the Court
for a decree dissolving the bonds of
matrimony heretofore and now exist
ing between you and the I'laintiff and
