U., which" wa3 held Tues day, was a splendid success. The attendance was excellent, and the following officers were elect ed by unanimous vote: Presi dent, Mrs. Lucy Sigler; Vice President, Mrs. A. L. Perkins; Recording Secretary, Mrs. Man ly Everitt; Treas., Mrs. J. M. Mann. Delegates were elected to the county convention, which meets in Forest Grove, Friday, Sept 12, and to the state con vention. At the all-day temper ance meeting to be held Sept. 20, on the court house lawn, the W. C. T. U. will entertain their speaker, Mrs. Edith Hill Booker, at a basket dinner. The mem ben escorted ten ladies to the registration rooms after their business meeting. The next meeting will be in the Christian church on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Mr. and Mrs. A. Gwinn, of Sheridan, are guests of their daughter, Mrs. J. Soper, of the Hawthorne place. L. a Hoeffel, of Witch Hazel, was up yesterday. He says there is yet considerable thresh ing in his section Mrs. Swearingen, of Portland, wai the guest of her daughter, Mrs. M. H. Stevenson, over Cwdiy. I mi SATURDAY ONLY BIG SHIPMENT OF and Boys' MRS. L. J. BRANDT Mrs. L. J. Brant died at Rose City Park,. Portland, September 10. 1913, aged 29 years, 9 months and 6 days. She wa3 formerly Miss Betty Bridges, and wa3 well known in Hillsboro, where she resided in her youth. She leaves to mourn her los8, her husband, L. J. Brant; a little daughter, Maxine; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Bridges; a sister, Mrs. C. I. Nachand, Port land, and a brother, Forrest Bridges, an electrical engineer, now in Massachusetts. The funeral will be held in Portland tomorrow morning, af ter which the remains will be brought to Hillsboro for inter ment, and there will be a short service at the cemetery, at 2:30 in the afternoon. Mrs. Brant was a universal fa vorite in Hillsboro, and her death is a shock to a large circle of friends. 0. G. Barlow, of Portland, was out to Hillsboro yesterday. Julius Asbahr, of South Tuala tin, was in town yesterday. F. C. Burgholzer, of Buxton, was in the city yesterday after noon, and called on the Argus. J. T. Morrison, one of the pio neers of Summer irrigation in this section, was in the city the firat of the week, Suits FRANCIS A. HAINRS Francis A. Haines died at his home in this city Saturday. Sent l6, 1913. He had been up to the city the day before and had risen at his usual hour. He dressed himself and suddenly fell, strick en with death. He was born at Springfield, 111., March 22, 1832, and crossed the plains to Oregon in 1852, driving an oxteam all the way. He returned to Illi nois in 1859 and married his first wife, who was a Miss Zerilda Brill. Four children were born to the union, all of whom died in infancy. He enlisted in Co. C, Light Artillery, Flood's Battery, 2nd Illinois, and served until the close of the war. He was also in the Yakima Indian war nf ,1855-6, serving with distinction. I a t Alter nis return to Uregon he lost his first wife. He was wed ded to Jennie Kendall in Septem ber, 1884. He resided in East Portland until 1893, when he moved to Hillsboro, where he made his home on Washington street until death. Mr. Haines was a member of the Methodist Church, and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. His aged wife sur vives him. She is at nreRpnt w. siding with Mrs. Chas.
