"That'a the worst love twaddle I ever

Taking up on from the other pack

that It waa my own ieuuianshlp at

I felt the hot blood mounting to my
cheek. Could It be possible that I had
written that sickening stuff 1 And
Ethel aha must have have been tle
meutvd. When I bad somewhat recovered
fram my surprise and abasement the
idea occurred to me to Indict one of
those old love letters of mine upon my
wife. I wished to see bow she would
taka me on paper as I was tw o decades
agooa. Our oldest son was now about
tbe age I was when I wrote the letters,
and Incidentally I thought he might be
doing tbe same thing. Also quite likely
our oldest daughter was or soon would
be encumbering the malls with what
be in time would be quite ashamed of.
I selected one of tbe most lovesick
of my letters and one of a near subse
quent date of Ethel's These I put In
my pocket to be kept till she should
go Into tbe country with the children.
When that time came. Instead of say
ing, "Now write tonight, dear," she
aaid, "Don't let It be a week before
you tell us bow you're getting on." 1
asked her' how she would like to have
ma write her a real uice long letter,
and she said she thought It would be
lovely.
She had been gone but a day when
1 sent her the lore letter 1 bad written
bar twenty years before and. taking the
ona she had written me, inclosed It
In the first envelope I received from
her that I might draw it on ber
when attacked for sending her such an
epistle.
When sufficient time bad elapsed for
bar to receive my letter I received a
telegram asking If I were ill. I replied
la tbe negative; I was perfectly well
and would spend the week end with
bar and the children. I arrived In
tbe evening Just before dinner, but had
not announced my train. When I got
bom I saw at once that there was
anxiety In tbe family, and it was on
my account My wife looked nt me
acrutlnizlngly, especially studying my
aye, which Is an indicator of insanity.
"What's the matterr I asked.
"What's the matter with your was
ber counter question. "Have you any
brain trouble'"
"Brain trouble? No. What makes
yon think I haver
"Read that," she said, producing tbe
totter I had sent her.
"Well, whafa the matter with ltr I
asked.
"Tba matter with it? Do yon mean
to say that you were In your right mind
when you wrote ltr
"1 do as much as you were in your
right mind when you wrote the reply."
"What reply?"
I drew out the lettpr I had in my
pocket for her. She took It nnd began
to read, but had not turued n pajte be
fore she stopped and exclaimt-d. "What
rubbish la thisr
"Rubbish! Do you rail your episto
lary production rubtishr
"My epistolary product ion?"
"Certainly. Vou wrote it."
Quickly turning her eyes upon It,
again she read a few sentences further,
atopped, looked nt tbe date, then at
th signature. Slowly shame rose In
ber cheeks as she realized that she was
reading one of ber love letters to me
When she was a girL
"You've been playing a trick on me,"
aba cried, turning away Impatiently
"Papa," said Ethel Junior, "I wonder
If Ml ever get such a lovely letter as
tbe on you wrote mamma."
"Very likely you will, my datishtir."
I replied, "and you will probably miike
aa lackadaisical a reply as your mother,
only to blush to the roots of your hnlr
twenty years after on reading It If It
turns up to mock you."

The many associates of years
testify back in Michican that
Theodore Roosevelt has never
been 'drunk, and that he drinks
but sparingly. With all his
faults it apjvars that drunken
ness is not one of T. l..s failing.
The partisan has ever been too
ready to spread such reports
about men, in public life, if they
should take one drink. They
would appear to figure, on the
same basis, that every man who
raised his hat to a woman is a
libertine, and every woman who
smiled a recognition to a man on
the street is outside the pate of
society. It is time that the
American tongue of litis class
had the treatment that a certain
horse undeservedly received up
on Galea Creek, the other day.
President Wilson appears to
have the situation of government
w ell in hand. There are but few
w ho do not give him credit for
being both statesman and pa
triot. Of course, there is the
disappointed man to consider.
Portland's election will soon be
over, and if w hat the opponents
say ot each other is all true, ev

chafing dishes, and other miscel-
laneou3 heating devices or small
domestic power devices are:
4 cents per Kilowatt hour.
Minimum monthly charge, $1.
This rate is for permanent ser

Ask the Washington-Oregon

during the hot months.
