Fred Schomburg is taking i
lot of good-natured badinage
these davs over his prospective
trip to hurope. tred sails in
June, and to haw the best that
is going he sent to Congressman
Hawiey for a passport 1 he in
strument arrived the first of th
week and we were all anxious to
have a look at the document. Of
course, it was necessary to have
it signed by the Stale Depart
ment and down in one corner
was the modest signature of W
Bryan. I his was the tly in
the ointment for Fred, as ho has
always been against the old war
horse the democrats love so well
Well." said Fred. "I guess

over there and he's been there
since I was, anyway. And
that pussitort will remain in the
Schomburg family a long time.
Dr. Matson. of Portland, who
is treating several luoercuiosis
. tii i
patients in this county, was sent
East to see a test of the Fried
man n serum, which has occupied
so much of the public press col
umns for the nast few months
Dr. Matson does not say that it
is worthless, but withholds his
endorsement He says in cast
of bone or joint tuberculosis the
most favorable results are shown
but whether or not ultimate cure
would follow he is not prepared
to say. He avers that no defi
nite results have as yet been ob
tained in pulmonary tuberculosis,
and in any event he stntos that
it will yet be months before the
government can report either a
favorable or unfavorable answer
as to efficacy. One sentence of
Dr. Matson's review says: 'The
fact that several patients re
ceived tho Friedman n cure and
have since died, although the
treatment was not in anyway re
sponsible for tho death, proves
that this is not &n absolute cure."

Constable McQuillan is in the

a Tucoma man and brought him
to the city last night, the prison

worthless check at Forest Grove,
some months ago: The man has
two picture shows at Tacoma,
and is doing well, and upon
plea to be allowed to remain at

Smith's court, he was not de
prived of his liberty. McQuillan
did not sleep well, and at two
o'clock this morning went to the

had not occupied the bed. The
attorney for the man says that
he went to Portland on business
and will be on hand this evening.

trying to make a getaway.
