C. Ferrine, of Yamhill, was in
town today, l'errine is now mak
ing good and is taking life easy.
His brother, Geo., well known
here, is making a fortune back in
Missouri, on a patent fire-place.
"Cully," as he is familiarly call
ed here, says he would hardly
know the old town of 20 years
ago, when he was a resident here.
Mark Butler returned to Hills
baro, yesterday afternoon, af
ter being on the road, on a sad
dle horse, since last Friday af
ternoon, with the two men who
took the cattle from the Cove
Oaks ranch to Salem. They
milked the cows three times
daily, and took their time, land
ing at Salem Tuesday morning at
11 o'clock. Eleven gallons of
cream were separated from the
miik night and morning, at one
ranch, and the farmer where
they remained over night took
the cream and refused to take
money for the keep of the three
men and herd.

California bus passed tho anti-
Japanese land lav bill, anil it
will U' signovi by tv. Johnson.
This is strictly within the rights
of a sovereign state, even if itj
docs invite trouble with Japan.
This principle was nwni.'.ed l
Uth resident Wilson ar.d Sei r'
tary of Stato liiyast. and they
did not attempt, at any time, to
coerce California into modifica
tion of the legislation. If we
did not have our "far llung"
kittle line extending tv the Phil
ippines we woultl have heard no
protest from, Japan. That is the
meat in the eoeoanut. and that's
all there ia to it. Of course,
Messrs, Wilson and P.ryan did all
they could U delav the legisla
tion, know ing the national dan
ger that might result. Hut if
the cocky little Nipponese thinks
he can dictate our legislation,
either of state ot nation, he is
badly in error. We would nat
urally be in better condition if
the Panama canal were com
pleted, for we could then get a
tleet over there to protect our
"foreign Kssessions"whuh were
foisted on us by the "patriots"
of the financial school. Hut we
will meet the issues when we
must, and that in the end we
shall handle things creditably to
a great people, goes without say
ing. A Marinette, Wis., lumber
man, who by the way is a mil
lionaire, tetls the Portland Ore
gonian that he has crossed the
Rocky Mountains (IS times, and
that every time he crosses to
Oregon he realizes more than
ever before the great future of
Oregon. A person not even a
millionaire can agree with the
Wisconsin man.
President Wilson evidently be
lieves in fulfillment of campaign
promises, anl he is going to give
the people just such a tariiT bill
as the American ieople of the
thoughtful class want. There
will be no trimming, no juggling,
and no tem'iori.ing with the
president and in this he is
eminently right.
The English women are dyna
miting, burning pncrty. and
doing all sorts of foolish and
militant things in order to get
suffrage. Some of them are un
der jail sentence, but the "rough
house" work keeps up.
