Attorney C. W. Idleman, once
attorney general for the state,
was out from Portland, Monday,
on business with circuit court
(proceeding. Mr. Idleman has
I taken up the simple life, having
retired to a ranch but he still
practices law.
Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Andrews,
of Cleveland, Ohio, were Hillsbo-j
ro visitors the past week, guests
at the Hotel Washington. Mr.
Andrews is looking for a busi
ness location in the state. He
has a brother in business at La
Grande. This is their first trip
to the West. I
Alonzo H. Curtiss, who set
tled in Washington County, in
18.13, died at The Dalles. Oregon,
last week. One of the first
pieces of work done by him. as a
contracting builder, was the con
struction of a house for Col. J. L.
Meek, Oregon's first U. S. Mar
shal. In 1855, he moved to The
Dalles, where he went into the
milling business, later. Two
children survive, and reside at
The Dalles.
J- II. Stanley and wife, of
Portland, were in town Satur
day, greeting friends. Mr. Stan
ley is well known here, having
been in charge of the public
schools for several terms in the
I nineties, t or nearly fifteen years
he has been superintendent in
1 various Portland schoolB, and is
now in charge of the Highland
i school, with a large corps of
teachers. "Stan" still holds his
age and spirit finely, and says
i that Ilillsboro always has a warm
i place in his heart.

Wm. Bissner, a brother of the

chief engineer on the boat, and
his family here felt much anxiety
for a day or so until they learned
there was no loss of life. Engi
neer Bissner was in a shipwreck
the Alaskan Siberian coast in
1906, when the Barbara Hunster
was wrecked, with a total loss of
cargo.
