I). M. C. Gault, school teacher
and elitor for years in Washing
ton county, died at his home in
Cottage Grove, Lane county.
Fridav. April 19. 1912, after an
illness that extended over a per
iod of two years. Mr. Gault, as
a young man, edited a paper in
Jackson county, later moving to
Washington county. He served
as principal in the public schools
in the eastern part of the county,
and in the '70s conducted several
terms in the Hillsboro schools.

First On In RESOURCES
In the nineties he became con
nected with the Hillsboro Inde
pendent, and edited and publish
ed, the paper for a joint stock
company until October. 1903.
In rebruary, 1904, he went to
Salem, where in partnership with
his son, Harry, he conducted the
Gault Printing Co. rrom there
he went to Cottage Grove and
bought the Sentinel He was la
ter appointed postmaster at Cot
tage Grove, and held the position
until a few months ago, when
his health caused him to send in
his resignation. Mr. Gault was
afflicted with liver trouble, and
was here some months ago to
consult with Dr. Linklater. The
physician told him there was lit
tie hope for him. and that it was
but a question of time.
Mr. Gault was born in Iowa, in
May, 1841, and came West when
he was a young man. He was
wedded twice, his last wife being
well known in Hillsboro. Be
sides his wife he leaves two sons
John, of Portland, and Harry, of
Everett Wash.; and Mrs. Hal-
sted, a daughter by his first wife.
Mrs. Mary Humphreys, of Port
land, is a sister of deceased.
The funeral took place Sunday
afternoon from the Congrega
tional church, of which he was a
member, Hev. Hughes officiating.
The Independent Order of Odd
Fellows had charge of the funer
al and officiated at the cemetery.
Mr. Gault was a man of strong
characteristics, and was the soul
of integrity. lie was a forceful
writer, and always took an inter
est in public affairs. During his
many years of residence here he
lived one door west of the Henry
Wehrung home, on Washington
street
