Gov. West is taking of calling
a special session of the legisla
ture for road legislation. If the
Governor is wise he will let the
legislature attend to road affairs
at home. It is quite unlikely
that under all the circumstances.
and with a prospect of repri
sals, a session would at this time
be of the greatest wisdom.
Ihe btate rair this year was
the one best bet of Oregon's dis
play of production and manufac
ture, and it was unfortunate
that bad weather interfered with
the splendid program. Either
the management should set the
Fair earlier, or later, and avoid
the usual September storms.
Pendleton last week gave the
West a touch of frontier life that
has never been equalled in the
arena before or since civilization
was organized. It was a red-
blooded affair from beginning to
end a commentary on strength,
bravery, agility and strategy
From the parched plains of
Patagonia to the arid acres of
Australia; from the verdant veldt
of South Africa to the steppes
where Mazeppa leaped to the
winds; from the North to the
South pole nowhere in space
have men in hundreds so ably
shown superiority over the ani
mal as that great exhibition
in
the little city of Pendleton, situ
ate at the border of the great
range district that once was, but
now is fast fading from us,
Thos. G. Todd, of Forest Grove
is back in old York State, where
he was born, and on a card to
the Argus reporter, says: "The
religious weekly beat me back
here. God Bless old Washing
ton County, and give my regards
to the boys." Mr. Todd was
once county commissioner, and
he has a host of friends all over
the county.
NEAR FATALITY
Willie Hanley, the two year old
son J. D. Hanley, superintendent
for the Kennedy Construction
Co., storm sewer contractors,
had a narrow escape from death
this morning. He was playing
around the sewer, in front of the
Chief of Police Blaser s house,
this morning, about 8 o'clock, in
company with an elder brother,
and in some manner fell into the
sewer, which was about 12 feet
in depth. His head struck on
the sewer pipe, which was ex
posed, and he was rendered un
conscious. It was at first thought
that his neck was broken, but
Dr. Robb and Dr. Tamiese say
there is every chance for the lit
tie fellow to live, as his spine is
not injured, lhescreamsof the
elder boy attracted the attention
of W. O. Jacobs, who swung into
the sewer and picked the lad up,
Dr. Robb was called, and later
Dr. Tamiesie was in consultation
At first the report that the boy
was instantly killed caused con
sternation, and mothers who
have been worrying over the
open sewers have been renewing
their watchfulness over sma
children in the unfinished dis
trict.
